Only slightly faster than titan v at 4k... hardly surprising. And only 32 % faster than 1080 ti... glad i cancelled my preorder. I will wait for the node shrink with the 3000 series, should bring a much bigger performance increase.

Yes, only. It's the smallest performance increase going from the top chip of the previous generation, to the top chip of the next generation since going from 480 to 580. 780 ti to 980 ti was a 50-60 % performance increase. Going from 980 ti to 1080 ti was a 60-70 % performance increase. So a 32 % performance increase is quite meager to say the least.

This will most likely increase close to 40% as NVIDIA matures the driver, and I completely speculate that it will be even larger in titles with proper DX12/Vulkan support. I wouldn't get it still, as this feels like an architecture severely limited by the 16nm stagnation we go through.

It will possibly increase with newer drivers, but the increase from 1080 ti to 2080 ti is still amongst the smallest ever. And yeah, i reckon things will really change on 7nm aswell.

Not really. it's to be expected actually. It's not meager at all. It's still quite significant. The way we see increases in performance is bound to start to taper off and we're seeing that in the last few years. Performance increase isn't going to be exponential, quite the opposite. Moore's law no longer applies or didn't you know?

Well, for someone who games on regular monitor with usual features, there is not so big gain. But if someone aims exclusively on new features like HDR and others which nVidia purposely shown in "marketing" materials, then gains are quite good due to older generation having excessive impact from them. Question is: does someone wants this kind of improvement well above usual price? Usually new generation replaced older in similar price with tiny bump at worst. But now old generation is around MSRP and on top of them there is new generation. Considering that GTX 1080Ti was premium priced product... What are those GPUs now? Ultra premium? When GPU costs same as CPU, MB, RAM, M.2 NVMe drive together or more... It really makes you think.

Don't forget, for (almost)* double the price. *depends where one lives, in some cases it's more than double.

Yes, only. The 1070 beat the 980 Ti by 13-14% for nearly half the price and the 1080 was ahead of the 980Ti by ~37-38% for the same price. The 2080 will be 5-15% faster in games for an extra 50-100$. Not to speak of the 1080Ti-2080Ti difference.

Yeah, this is would benefit from switch to 7nm. The tensor and RT cores make the silicon so much larger that the price is high. It's really large and complex chip.

Moore's law doesn't apply, as there are several ways of getting around it. Firstly they can still do additional node shrinks, and secondly (and most importantly) they are working on combining several chips for gpu's in the same way amd combine chips with threadripper. This would enable them to still increase performance tenfold over the performance we have now, architectural improvements, aswell as improvements to rendering techniques excluded.

Remember, we are paying for wafer space. Putting 3x 300mm^2 on interposer or use 1x 900mm^2 will improve cost only by difference in wasted space by low yield of larger chips. It works well for AMD's Ryzen. Will likely work well for GPUs. But having 2x 400mm^2 GPU will cost double of what one 400mm^2 chip will. (Apparently it will not result in double prices on graphics cards, as chips make only fraction of final price.)

I game at with a 1080ti, G-Sync, and also VR. The simple is that in previous generation releases, the new '70 card ran neck and neck with the previous '80Ti. New gen 80ti's were what $700? Now, it's the new 80, not the 70 that compared to the 1080ti AND they want $1200 for the Ti? If money is no object, then go for it. For all others, this a ill-advised purchase. Especially if they rumors are true and the release another generation in a year. That might be the one to buy. Has anyone heard if any of the new features will affect or benefit VR?

These cards are just a stopgap. They couldnt fit enough raster power under the hood and add their "AI" cores as well. So yeah, it makes sense that even a full 2 years later there isnt much of a performance increase.

You're forgetting that an 83% increase when the FPS is 23 is meaningless since its not playable. Many people are ignoring the fact that these RTX cards will absolutely crush previous cards when running RT or DLSS, which is kinda the main purpose of this generational shift. I'd like to see the numbers when FFXV is running DLSS.
