This doesn't really bother me that much. I expect such stores to also have cameras at the registers, so they can compare what you buy, with your face. They would be able to build a database for gender, ~age, maybe race, with certain products. An example of it's usage, and forgive me, it's the first clear cut one i could think of, Girls/Women between the ages of 14 and 40, being the primary purchaser of feminine hygiene products (tampons/pads etc). If the store detects a high influx of such customers, at that current time, they could run an instant sale on a particular product. Tampax for example. And with many stores adopting the digital price tag (clothing at Kohl's often uses LCD pricing guides that sit on the clothing racks), The guides/tags can be updated on the fly, instantly. Another example, America's food stamp. If it recognizes a higher influx of repeat customers that pay with food stamps on a certain day of the month. (beginning of month usually) a store can adjust the prices on the fly. And with camera's in the aisles too, they could maintain the price you saw in the aisle, with what you pay at the register, even if the price has since changed. So you guys looking at this as some sort of invasion of privacy, or what ever. It's just the evolution of marketing. Should have all seen it coming. I did, when stores would send text alerts to repeat customers, using the phones GPS if they were near the store. I'm not saying I agree with it. Just that I totally saw it coming and everyone else should have too. Especially with racial estimating too. But lets be honest, racial stereotyping is super powerful for marketing. It's a rough estimate. It would probably also consider what purchases you make, and compare it to what other estimated females or males bought in a way to analyze it, if it isn't sure. Furthermore transgendered people usually identify as a specific gender, though this isn't always the case, with people who prefer trans-intersex, and trans-androgynous. This doesn't really bother me, so long as it doesn't also take name, address, phone number into account. It would lead to a massive influx of personalized junk mail and telemarketers specific to the products you buy. Similar as to how ads online, show stuff related to recent searches. Except it would be offline, in your mail etc.
