Was the first good enough to justify a second?

Yup, it's a very good action horror game with a similar feel to RE4. My only real complaint is that it was too linear. I was hoping for an experience more like the PSX era survival horrors like Resident Evil 1-3, Parasite Eve 2, Dino Crisis, etc, with plenty of exploration in the mix. EW is very linear, though, even more so than RE4, which I already felt was too linear.

Given the resolution of these pictures is one to believe that this game was played in 480p when captured? HA...! Just always wondered why these pictures are usually really small when trying to "promote" something...

The first was a love letter from Shinji Mikami to fans of survival horror games. It was visceral, brutal, unnerving, and downright fun to play. Sure its story was a mess, but hey just look at Resi series now, and the A.I at times wasn't the best which led to some funny moments. The game was also built using the horrendous IDTech5 engine, the game was locked at 30fps and they had huge borders covering the top and bottom of the screen. They wanted a cinema/movie look to the game, which didn't work at all. But this was patched out and a 60fps option was added also. In my opinion the first Evil Within was the best survival horror games since RE4 and in many many ways it actually surpasses that game as I felt RE4 was too easy, and not as scary as Evil Within.

Let's just hope it's better optimized.

absolutely! and I would say that it is no less linear than resident evil 1-4. I think if you go back and play 1-3 especially, and even 4, you'll find that there's only one or a few options to progress forward outside of the mansion or wherever 90% of the game takes place... 4 had a bigger world, but it wasn't until 5 and 6 that upgradeability got pretty intense and that justified going back and farming the crap out of every level. upgrading was awesome in the evil within ^^ super fun. it was practically a role playing game. it has very good design, music, character animation, and gameplay. it is very much like a resident evil game, or like the last of us--the only other non RE survival horror that comes to mind that's actually good. (silent hill looks ok just haven't found the time). I just hope they add co-op mode!!! like every survival horror game should have. but if not, i'm sure me and my bf will enjoy it from start to finish taking turns when we die, just like the first one.

I do not really love the first one since everything seems to weird for me. Some parts are cool, but the left parts feel weird or just plain designed.
