Yeah, I think you might be thinking that they were saying that Z87 will support broadwell, which is not true. Only Z97 will support broadwell.

Of course they're not gonna say it out loud yet & promote it, they need to sell some Z97 first, but when it hits retail same Intel MEI firmware bios update procedure, like mentioned in this article for ECS.
Or here with Asus

or here with MSI

September 2013, no sign of Z97 yet and listen what this Intel CEO says about Broadwell and Z87 systems..

Makes sense, there's no huge difference between the two.

Yeah exactly, Imho only that sata express is worth mentioning and maybe better auto OC ie Asus new 5way optimization and better sw fan control.
Skylake is imo that real next-gen thing 🤓
DDR4, 4 new instructions, more L cache, more pcie lanes, although its still 4core, but it says 4core as default, maybe we could see 6 core on mainstream? 😀
Also Skylake-E,
it should have the same X99 compatibility as SB & IB @ X79, because its already DDR4, etc. Also since there won't be any Broadwell-e, well there will be but only in Xeon form and for multi socket workstations (at least according to wiki).
Haswell-e to skylake-e will be uber for sure 😛c1:

Yeah, I'm just jumping on the Z97 train since I'm way overdue. By the time the good stuff drops, I'll be out of college and making my engineer salary so I'll load my rig up then.
I have to admit, I'm really excited about getting an Asus motherboard though. I was salivating watching the UEFI demos. The fan control is sweet!
