ISA > PCI > AGP > PCI Express - Yes, finally, no more need to upgrade motherboards for new graphics cards! OH NO! There's no reason for people to upgrade motherboards for new graphics cards! I know! PCIe 1 > PCIe 2 > PCIe 3 > PCIe 4 > PCIe 5 > etc...

Do we even have any PCIe 5.0 GPUs yet?

You skipped MCA and EISA 🙂

And PCI-X and 64-bit PCI.

Intel Alder Lake, you're so outdated 😱

PCIE 6 is where things need to be at, AMD already proved that they can't get a fully working gen 4 controller because of the noise complexities.

haha to be fair, gpu's and other addon devices I have used have never refused to work if you put them on an older pci-e slot. But yeah I get your point, and I also am concerned how fast updates are now going to be pushed out. People like me who tend to only upgrade if I have bottlenecks on every day stuff, are going to start feeling dated when PCI Express is on v200 and I am still on v3, and amd/intel now doing almost annual cpu releases as well. I did test my 1080ti on the PCI-E gen 3 x4 slot in my AMD machine, and the performance wasnt bottlenecked. Maybe one day I will test my RTX 3080 as well.

Try running Pascal+ on a Intel Gen1 controller

And PCI-X and 64-bit PCI.
...and VLBUS aka VESA Local Bus, short lived slot between ISA and PCI... I had two 486s with VLBUS slots. Oh God, now I feel old 🙁

You forget also CompactPCI and VESA (or VLB) for PC

by the time we have 6.0 7.0 will be here

Don't have one to use, so cant sorry. 🙂

BLEH!:

Last I checked, most graphics cards could barely even saturate PCIe gen 3, let alone 4 and 5. MAYBE with the re-sizeable bar technology, haven't bothered to check that, will make a difference, but as it is, I feel like most technology advances nowadays are just tech companies flexing anyways, due to the global chip shortage.

That was my thought. I see no reason to upgrade to a PCIe 4.0 system.
