They don't need to stop the project. Just don't distribute the games, keep just a forum and change the images to their on. The mod could live on and that's it.

I would flip out if EA attempt to take down Project Reality: BF2.

I thought that was what this was going to be about. The standalone download is still based on BF code, unless I missed something.

Typical EA killing off stuff. It's why i havn't bought a game from them in 10 years.

Nice to see EA supporting modders.

Same here. I don't consider myself their customer.

It's not a copy/paste message from EA so that's actually pretty nice to see even if they have to essentially stop the project since EA has to defender their intellectual properties from how I understand how this all works though I don't know if a compromise could be reached with some more discussion but EA might not be willing to go that far and without their support the team can't really proceed in any other way.

Acti Blizzard did some deal with Vanilla WoW folks. Activision is a pretty low bar :P

Why do they need to entirely shut down, if all they ask is not to distribute their game clients anymore? Either this story is leaving out some key important parts, or they are just overreacting. Its not like they asked them to stop their services entirely.

It becomes a nightmare if you do not offer the required game client files on your website, players will download all kinds of different versions and expect you to provide support. Some won't even bother seeking out the client files meaning lost potential players. Any attempt to circumnavigate the download ban would result in a much stronger legal response from EA rather than the polite notice posted. The EA notice is a mortal wound to a project such as this.

EA should team up with Revive team and bring the games to Origin

typical EA, turned off the servers with old games ... And now do not give to play in the already bought game on the network, even for free on someone else's power ... EA, EA never changes (c) The purchase of BF3 was my last game from EA. BF2! forever =)

Obviously for this to be legal players would already have to own those games, and those are so old that they should have them on physical discs. So.. uh? Basically, people were playing the game for free without owning them, yes? And EA doesn't like that? Well big surprise.

Thats it for me, i will never buy an EA game again.

Bf heroes was awesome at the start although was plagued with cheaters big time, then they increased the renting price to rent the optimal gun for your character so you had to buy it permanantly for 5 euros witch i did for all 3 classes i was happy to do it even i liked it that much ,,, then they intoduced consumables like tank repair kits that you could spam and buy with real money and witnessed people getting in tanks and spam repairs rendering themselfs invisible this made me quit... i am sad i missed this service i would have loved some good old bf heroes fun with out the pay to win crap ea injected after .

I am a firm believer that projects such as this actually increase sales of current products. Players play for free on the old stuff and if they love it then some will 'go retail' for the latest full experience. This is the route I took before subscribing to WoW and also before buying the later Battlefield games.

I don't see the point if they aren't going to do anything with the games themselves. Kindly asking them to make it clear they aren't part of EA would've done just as well I think.

So apparently people don't read the article, or this site now supports piracy... They were asked to stop distributing their games for FREE, and stop using their trademarks. Unless I missed it, the service can continue.

I still buy EA's stuff. Can't wait for Battlefront 2. I buy individual products, not business practices, I don't work for them nor do I own stock in them. It's part of capitalism and I'm all for ownership and profit and the freedom to reap as much profit as possible. If they want to keep the stranglehold on their IP's then it's their freedom to do so and anyone complaining apparently doesn't understand economics or are hypocrites regarding freedom.

Who is "them"? It's their hired law firm that takes care of these things, not the CEO, not his secretary and certainly not the myriad of other staff working at EA. Do you really think their law firm gives a crap? Their job is to protect a companies IP and it never means that they'll never do anything with it, usually most copyright holders find ways to make money off of their older stuff at some point.

EA may not be issuing the notices directly but it's their decision to have them sent. No one is questioning EA's right to the IP. The only party that benefits from this action is the law firm/lawyers if nothing else is done. More power to you if you want to support a company like EA, I guess.
