I am so over these companies.

Obviously they were forced to do it...

Not surprised. Anyone on sites like this/techs etc, should know better anyway. have seen up to 10K of (malware) infections found by free stuff, while Norton (tech version) says "clean"..

I can promise you where this is going. While it is optional now to have it on I think in the near future if you choose to use these products for "free" this will be force enabled.

Antivirus and related software are scam and fraud, nothing new here.

Norton and Avira: We've infected your PC, so you don't have to.

This is such a nice gesture of Avira! o_O This PC hardware related energy sucking mining should be banned from the universe to be honest...

Maybe someone at NortonLifeLock really likes the film "The Dark Knight" and decided to put a quote from the film into practice? "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" - Harvey Dent I did find their firewall software to be very useful back in the day of dial-up internet and their Norton Ghost software has been useful for quite a few people but they've really fallen so low now....

Folks need to understand a corporation in general has no morality. Its motivations are to make profit. The only real tethers to common sense for a big corp is the consumer vote. And when they get so big they choke out competition, even that erodes which is how we end up with companies pushing products their consumers do not really want. It becomes a case of the tail wagging the dog. I find smaller companies and independents can still be passionate about a good product and still have a morality. I personally try to stick with those when possible but that is often difficult.

i have being telling people to uninstall anti virus since 2008, you just need to know what you download and from where.. but i guess every person choose their favorite poison. The saddest part is that probably there are laptops with this crap preinstalled

Not everyone are as good at using computers as most users here at Guru3D. Look at how many times people get phished as an example. There are many fake websites that go to exceptional lengths to try and fool a user and have them attempt to log in with their details. For some, it can be very hard to notice that very slight error on a URL or it might be a URL that sounds convincing and plausible. It doesn't hurt to have some basic protection, what is the problem are those that are supposed to be protecting such users are instead taking advantage just as much as a confidence trickster would.

It's been a number of years since I looked in to Antivirus and Malware software... So what do people recommend these days, I just want to see if things have changed much.

I dropped Eset NOD32 for Windows Defender a year ago or so. Noticed Eset was doing a lot of disk writes. Used it for like 10 years or longer.

I recommend using Microsoft's built in firewall and virus scanner in there defender product. So nothing additional. They are scoring as good as any other dedicated virus scanner this last year or so(finally). The best add on tools imo are the ones that prevent / warn when sites are trying to load malicious stuff. Microsoft also has this covered if you use their Edge browser via what they call SmartScreen as long as you turn it on.

I dont see a problem here, it says TURN OFF in big text, that enough.
