Samsung 850 models are still more expensive now than they were 1.5 years ago when I built this machine. Saying SSD prices are all the time developing in the good direction is not entirely correct, even if that was the obvious larger trend.

I wouldn't anymore run the OS, programs, and games from traditional HDDs. Some small indie game might still fly, but not the real stuff. So, if you need it, there's no choice, making "too expensive" not a valid point anymore.

I bought my Crucial MX100 256Gb SSD in December 2014 for 102€. Considering you can get a Crucial MX300 275Gb SSD for the same price today, I don't see how it got more expensive. I paid 0.40 cents per Gb then and I know you can get a 2Tb HDD for less than 0.05 cents per Gb, but the performance you get out of an SSD is mind blowing. After you used an SSD as a boot drive, you won't go back to HDD: trust me. At the moment, you have to go SSD for boot and performance tasks. If you need space for your porn and other shit, then get them on your old hdd.

If I had the free money, I'd definitely be 100% SSD. I notice in games like Doom that stream a lot of textures, on my 7200 rpm 64mb cache 1tb HDD textures stream in a little late.

There's generally a good deal on big SSDs like 1TB~ or so for $200. Just have to look around.

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/ Check that, you'll see all sorts of deals online. Microcenter had a 20% off yesterday so a $250 ssd would be right at 200. Waiting game.

i try to stay with the companies that are OEM's. Crucial (Micron) is one of the biggest. Samsung makes some great SSDs, but are over-priced vs. Crucial here in the states. i also like Crucial because i can drive there in 10 minutes...they have happy employees which is always a good sign for me (ya ya Samsung has happy employees too). i'm not going to buy a Micron product under a different name with a shorter warranty.

MX300 cost 0,25 cents per GB. Micron 1100 is a bit more expensive - 0,32 cents per GB. It is quite a lot cheaper than in 2014, almost twice cheaper.

Samsungs are a bit more expensive, as we talking about EVO series with 3D TLC NAND, but hey are a bit faster, which isn't really a big deal. They, though, have a quite longer lifespan. As per 3DNews endurance tests both 256 GB 850 EVO and 275 GB MX300 lasted 2,7 PB and around 2 PB without major count of remaps. 850 EVO, though, lasted over 15000 of block-erases. MX300 just slightly over 10000. Which means Samsung have better NAND, while Micron have better firmware. 256 GB 960 EVO, though, already lasted 3 PB, but with just little bit of remaps. Both Samsung and Micron are leaving Toshiba, Sandisk and others far behind.
