One thing that I don't understand with this and other reviews of SSD's is the lifespan. They note in an example of this one that if you wrote 50GB a day, the drive referenced would last 77 years. The problem with those numbers if I understand right, is that assumes a full write and erase of the entire drive. Say you have a 1tb drive and load it up with 750 gig of data and games. Those areas are fixed and do not necessarily need to be erased or re-written. The remaining 250 gig of working area would be the only part of the drive that would be used for day to day read/writes including swap files etc. Also SSD files are written in blocks with even small files writing larger areas. Wouldn't the life of the drive actually be variable depending on the static space used?

Really curious if direct storage will mean faster m.2s are required. That's when I'll start to look at m.2 benchmarks again.

The firmware of an SSD moves data around when idle to work around this. I believe this is one of the main reasons why the OS needs to issue TRIM commands to it to tell it which areas are free so the SSD can then move other data to it and keep the write cycles more evenly distributed across the whole of it.

I feel like Hilbert is being hit with a pile of these things, lately. It's good that he endures the downpour with such equanimity. Me, I'd be screaming--"No more--enough! Stop already! Aggghghghghg!"...;) With this NVMe drive, I couldn't use the pictured heatsink--not enough room vertically. But, the 500GB 980 Pro I'm using runs without heat-throttling with just the mobo-supplied stock thin "sink" on top--I really don't know if it would run any differently if I removed the thin little heatsink--might run better without it. It's running fine, though, so I have no motivation to remove the little heatsink. I know they can generate enough heat to throttle and even crash in some cases. When my older NVMe drive, the EVO 960 250GB was my boot drive, I could not run a Defender AV scan on C:\ that would complete, as the heat would cause the drive to throttle and then crash to the desktop. Doesn't happen with the 980 Pro, though--so I can readily believe such large heatsinks are certainly justified on some of these drives.

I think the last time I mentioned something must have been a year ago. There were more leading up to that, I dont remember which they were though.

Wow, that's one chunky heat sink. You could probably use it as a hammer if you needed to!

Why the XPG Gammix S70 2 TB is not in the list ? it's one of the fastest out there and the price is lower than corsair ( 7400/6400 R/W )
