I see a lot of people with current gen CPU (4xxx) wanting to upgrade to these new 5xxx enthusiasm cpus (not just here) I know it's fun to upgrade to the non-mainstream platform but keep in mind that the gain will be very low for the price you gonna pay (I hope you gonna resell your 4xxx platform close to retail price), specially if all you do is play games, browse the internet and encode a video once in a while. This platform is for content producer and for people with money to throw (enthusiasms). TBH the only real gain that is worth the money is if you're currently on socket 775 or on X58 platform, anything more recent than that, specially if overclocked...will not give you much. Just a warning to those without a clue :P
Very well said and I agree. Also there might be some benefit for users coming from the 1st generation non enthusiasts i7s as well as the i5s.

400 bucks price increase for 5 MB more of cache and -500MHz with their flagship CPU.

Now, now Seaplane pilot. How dare you question Nvidia/Intel's 'strategy' of '(much) less for more' /sarcasm off

Nice here in portugal it will cost more than 400€, maybe someone now will buy my second 4820k for 250.

Two more physical cores/4 more logical cores not that that makes it any more of a value.

Absolutely. In fact I have an i7-950 and don't plan on upgrading until the second half of 2016. I don't see the point of upgrading when the development has slowed down so much that is has nearly stopped anyway. I would've upgraded quite often if Intel kept releasing interesting products, but when each new series is hardly faster than the last they don't deserve my money.

Not too bad u get an additional 2 cores now for almost the same price too bad theyre already a little pricy. I had to settle for the 3770k after owning a 2500k for 3 years because i couldnt justify buying a whole new system when the cpu's really havent changed much, having a new socket every revision is getting really annoying.

In the case of the 5xxx, this seems to have been done solely because they knew many people would not switch given the fact that the performance (and I'm making an educated guess) is ~10% better than the 4xxx series. But with a new platform, even skeptical enthusiasts are more likely to switch simply to have the latest and greatest. I mean FFS, LGA 2011-3? It's the same socket rearranged (and conveniently not backwards compatible), it's pretty obvious. There is still no info in terms of performance and that says 'nothing to write home about' to me. However, I am one of those skeptical enthusiasts so I am very interested to see how well the 8 (and to a lesser extent the 6) core perform 🙂

Think I will upgrade with 1 of the six cores. Been holding out for more than just another quad. I will just keep everything else save cpu, memory and mb. Could go with a much cheaper DC build right now and keep my ram but I think I will wait.

Let me know how that goes. I think I will hold out a while longer just not impressed by anything gaming wise coming to PC that would warent an upgrade.

I saw this ~ 350€ now, use to be ~ 356€ in another store 1-2 days ago, most were ~ 370-390€ mark.. http://i.imgur.com/Zk0IAa2.png http://compare.eu/intel-core-i7-5820k-bx80648i75820k-a1121100.html I see 47x0K price also dropped a bit, most are ~ 270-290€ now. 🤓That entry 5820K was my initial plan before with old Yorkfiled but 1year moar waiting meh, this bitch now own's too, swallows anything I throw at it xD Also 140W TDP just for entry is a lot and ram latency, lowest so far is CL13-13-13 @ 2133mhz.. But for 32gb 4x8gb sticks a hefty 550€ http://compare.eu/?cat=ramddr3&sort=p&xf=2216_DDR4~256_4x~255_13#xf_top I'll just wait for X179 chipset and skylake-e , entry 8core cpu like this 5820K now, should be around the same 300-350€ price then..

That's the things I'm worried about too: 140W tdp will be challanging to cool for most things except custom h2o I'm afraid, and the DDR4 is very pricey still... also, benchmarks have to be checked anyway.

Nothing here to see, move along.

Wow, time to upgrade.
