Been hearing about this tech for so long now, nice to see it finally arriving. Very curious to hear how it handles very large numbers of writes! I imagine it will be a Very Long term storage stable device though, far exceeding current high capacity HDDs. This part sounded very curious to me:
A plasmonic near-field transducer (NFT) has been integrated into the recording head, to heat the media and enable magnetic change at a specific point. Plasmonic NFTs are used to focus and confine light energy to regions smaller than the wavelength of light.
Love learning about clever tech, going to look this up later when I finish today's work 🙂 EDIT: Heh, thinking about it, it is probably a similar principal to photon pumps used to link up multiple solid state lasers to force the photons down very narrow fiber opitc cable, so narrow they avoid having to worry about wavelengths of light allowing linking up to I think it is currently about 6 solid state lasers, stacking their power. Just in this case it is much simpler, just to get an incredibly small beam/focal point. Still will be an interesting read.
