I wonder how much it'll cost as it doesn't appear to be a budget-oriented model. Also, how to read specs: "typically RT-AC87U can effortlessly cover an area up to 465m2". If we consider it to be a circular area, then S = Pi*r^2 => 465m^2 = Pi * r^2 => r^2 = 148 => range would be pretty much up to 12m

That's 12 meters = 40 feet? Not 12 miles?

Any store already selling this one? Thanks

Yeah, I'm metric 🙂 Basically it this range spec isn't impressive by any means. However, if they manage to get real 12 meter high-quality transfers, then it's a nice product to have.

I can't find it anywhere in Europe. I guess we have to wait a bit, and then pay a nice sum of $$$.

I bought mine from amazon.com, and they shipped it to the UK, cost me about £210 with shipping/import tax. but also saw it for sell in BestBuy when I was in the states. Been using the AC87R, its the same model/hardware and seriously the signal on this thing is crazy, it destroys my old AC68U in output and range, the firmware is little beta'ish there are a lot of bugs with it, but nothing a firmware update cant fix, Having issues with media bridge mode with AC68U but part from that its pretty epic!

I'm able to get 2-3 bars on the highest floor in my house, 4 floors altogether with high ceilings, router sitting on the first floor, and that's traditional English style brick house so wall pretty thick. on the 5Ghz, able to stream from my PC to my Nvidia Shield without any issues with that range. a lot better than what I was getting before on AC68U.

That sounds like some serious range. Have you bought a consumer-grade WiFi router or this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Frequency_Active_Auroral_Research_Program

I currently have an ASUS model RT-N18U and I couldn't be more satisfied with it, it's so fast and the software is so intuitive, you don't really need any manual.

But can it play Crysis? joking aside.. Been procrastinating on buying a new router to replace my old DGL-4500. I WAS waiting for the wrt1900ac, I'm sure glad I didn't day one it like I was planning as it still seems to be a ddwrt disaster and that was a huge selling point for the thing. Hopefully this one will have ddwrt before long, I'll be keeping an eye on it. I made my boss buy an rt-ac66u when I was networking our new shop while it was being built back in november 13. Even with the oem firmware it is the best router ive had my devices connected to.

But just a question I saw the R version at Best Buy and know that it`s the same HW, but where can we find the FW updates since Asus did not released the device at the website? Thanks again

You can get the firmware from here Asus support page for AC87R there has been 3 firmware updates so far for the AC87R, but Asus removed them and there only one currently available. Also on the router itself, It will download the latest firmware for you. http://s30.postimg.org/as6odtnr5/firmware.png

No clue. but based on the AC68U/AC68R the firmwares seem to come out the sametime, so I guess isn't to much of a problem going based on that.
