Hi Hilbert, Does the card produce coil whine only when you overclock it, or also when you use the default frequencies ? And can you hear the coil whine with a closed case ?

At defaults, it's a tiny bit. I doubt very much you will be able to hear it in a closed case as you need to be like 30cm away from the card to be able to hear it.

So its basically the same as the MSI, noise level 1db difference, temperatures 2ºC difference and performance barely an fps or two here and there. Unless there is a noticiable price difference or stock problems, take the one you like most for its looks, MSI for me although ASUS backplate is badass.

Thanks! That's pretty awful indeed. Kudos to Guru3D for noticing it and switching to the retail BIOS, although I'd like to see that highlighted - that really puts me off from buying this version. For those who haven't read it, here's the relevant bit:

As you can see the review boards sent out are locked and loaded in the OC mode for GPU and Memory clocks. I have spotted some reviews from other media using the wrong BIOS/clocks. This OC setting normally you can only access and enable with ASUS GPU Tweak software (you'd need to run that software in the background as each time you restart this software modus needs to re-enable the clocks). After contacting the ASUS marketing team we received and upgraded the card with the retail BIOS

Didn't MSI and all them do something similar with the 1080? Then you have like the performance bias setting on all the Ryzen motherboards.. I feel like all those practices need to stop.

Yea I wouldn't be surprised if the most of (or even all) the manufacturers do it routinely. We really need reviewers to call this things out and make it clear when it happens.

Beware of fans. ASUS has an agreement to make completely custom fans that do not have regular mounting patterns and use model numbers that are pre-existing with different patterns and voltage. It is literally impossible to get replacement fans after your warranty runs out. I have rigged an MSI fan on my ASUS STRIX. ASUS will not supply or sell you a replacement fan and the actual fan manufacturer doesn't sell ASUS's custom fans on the open market. Thus you will not be able to repair your VERY expensive video card correctly with a simple fan replacement without custom modifications. I am boycotting any product that they produce with their "custom" unreplaceable fans. :bang:

Vrm Hey Hilbert I'm wondering if your findings on the VRM temps are universal to all Strix models, it just doesn't make sense. The 1080 Strix last year had the same cooler yet the VRM was comparable if not better to the competition. This is concerning, like the EVGA SC models last year. I was in the same situation with an MSI card. They wouldn't ship me a fan or point me in the direction of where to purchase one. Then i found one on AliExpress the EXACT same model and branded MSI fans, 13$ incl shipping, took me 10 minutes to replace the fans. Do a search for Asus Strix and you will find your fans on AliExpress.

MSI card seems to have better cooling in VRM area. It's a good 10 degrees lower than Asus according to Hilbert's FLIR images. Too bad I'm getting tired of MSI's red designs, I already have MSI 980Ti which looks almost identical, don't feel like buying another black and red GPU that doesn't match my case color theme.

Very possible, tweaking can card a bit per card. But it is also rather important where exactly you measure that Boost clock. E.g. a lighter game can very well go to 2.1 GHz on the card. Our Turbo clock is tested at 3DMark Firestrike scene 1 looped. Have a peek.

Cool will do a similar loop tonight and have a look when I get home from work, but it's obvious you got screwed on the silicon lottery with that one haha! Your MSI Gaming X was a good sample at least, it seems that the Ti is even more sensitive to high clocks than the 1080 was. Most online techs only got up to 2038mhz stable, some of them 2050mhz. I should count myself lucky with this one.
