Sometimes they do... as with X99 and Haswell as well as Broadwell support. What makes the difference, which ones get an update to support the next CPU line, and which one not, probably lies with Intel's technical marketing 😀

Exactly my thoughts... By the way, what would happen if someone tries to update an Z170/270 MB with a BIOS from a Z370??? I know this is a stupid question but i´m curious.

You'd have your self a brand new paper weight
but in all seriousness it is possible to modify the bios of a z170 board along with shorting 1 pin on the cpu, to get 6core coffelake working on z170 and z270. There are even reports that 6 core cpus work on DDR3 z170 motherboards.

This is old news the bios has been available for almost 1 month now.
I had personally checked the bios file using AMIBCP tool and it already had 8 Core 9000 series support.
It just only got officially confirmed today that's all.
Anyway nice to have an option for an 8 core upgrade down the road.

well that new motherboard will be shorting that pin to ground, which is why you need to do it on z170 inorder for the cpu to be bootable, its little things like this that make the cpu "incompatible". Im not sure if anyone has started making stickers yet ,like for lga771-775 , but it would be pretty easy to do.

AFAIK, "fitting" mostly hasn't been the issue with the past couple of Zx70 Intel chipsets (and mainboards based on them). It was basically a matter of getting the microcode, management engine, UEFI GOP driver, etc. and BIOS updated to support newer CPUs (as long as the board is able to provide enough power to support additional cores, etc.). The main difference is that for these new CPUs meant for the "new" Z390 chipset and the "old" Z370 chipsets manufacturers provide official updates to officially support these CPUs, whereas before you would have to rely on crafty modders to get your new CPU working on your old mainboard.

Why? Doesn't seem like an ideal upgrade path for an 8700K owner. I have an 8700K and that is definitely not the path I would take. 9900K or wait for this 8700K owner. Thats like "upgrading" from a 7700K to an 8600K its just not really an upgrade. There are some instances where software enjoys the HT over having all real cores. 9700K over 8700K seems even worse than 7700k to 8600k. That is 12 threads vs 8 whereas 7700K to 8600K is 8 threads to 6 and the difference still isn't huge. I think the 9700K will be ideal for those coming from older generations even then I will be very curious to see how it stacks up to the 8700K in various scenarios. I am curious if you would share why this seems like a good upgrade to you? Is it the supposed soldier?

So my thing is will it be full 9000 series support? I feel like with Intel I shouldn't get too excited about the possibility of running a 9900K on my Z370 hero. There is that possibility that they drop a bomb on our hopes and 9000 series support stops before 8 core or only goes through 9700K tops lol. Hopefully overclocking is good with a z370/9000 series combo provided you have a board with better VRM. Anyways, just my thoughts.

It's funny how Intel changes course and doesn't require you to buy a new motherboard for the upcoming processor generation, the same usual suspects who criticized them non-stop are still criticizing them... or are completely silent. Looks like those who were saying such criticism was agenda driven and not objectively determined on a case by case basis were right.

My pc is only for gaming mostly, and i dont care if the performance is the same, aslong as its not worse, i want to get rid of the toaster 8700k that i have, few games iv seen spikes into 90c and thats with a great air cooler and air flow in my new case, and im not into delidding a cpu so if the 9700k has got all the temps sorted and performance is same or better thanks to the extra 2 core im all happy to switch, il sell the 8700k for £150 or less on ebay when the time comes

Fair enough. I guess if you are not willing to delid it can make some kind of sense. Delidding is easy though and yields slightly better temps than soldier based on a Ryzen delid and liquid metal install done by der8auer. Not losing anything delidding. I agree that getting a CPU that is soldiered in the first place is the ticket. GL!

Wow 90c that is very hot indeed you must be very unlucky with your cpu!
my 8700k non delidded on stock settings with 28c ambient under prime 95 avx,
OCCTPT and various other benchmarks i get max temps of around 65c.
Only with my 5ghz avx offset 2 all cores HT on overclock i see temps around 80c..
Using a Corsair H110i gt for cooling balanced setting.
