These chipset naming are too close for comfort. Imagine ordering a X399 motherboard and receiving a X99 motherboard instead, vice versa. Though this'll mostly be an issue when hunting for used parts, which will take awhile.

Naming the top end chipset x399 seems like a dick move by AMD. If they went off history is should have been x390 not x399. This just comes off as a, "Me too!" move. That said, if you are informed (which anyone buying in HEDT should be) this will not cause confusion.

Like you said nobody buying into HEDT platforms will be confused as they will have done lots of research before spending this kind of cash. Someone at AMD was having a little fun with Intel, what are they going to name there next chipset x499? I think it was little FU in that name. 🙂

AMD was always liked trolling both intel and nvidia in PR, many times however they didn't deliver past that. At least this time it looks like they are competitive again (at least in CPUs).

Thing is it comes off petty and immature. When a PR department starts acting like their raving fanboys it's never a good thing. I stopped buying Samsung products after there galaxy ad campaigns that were actively trolling Apple. Other consumers are like me. It's not good business practice.

I don't think most normal people (read, non hardcore enthusiasts) think much about this, definitely not enough to not purchase something they wanted to buy. Not for trolling anyway, maybe a political position in an ad, but trolling another multi-billion dollar company ...

Those ITX X370 and B350 motherboard will be very very enticing indeed for a lot of people. The ability to build a small thread crunching monster machine for basically half the price of Intels offering.
