Will be interesting to hear what the 600 series might offer, doesn't seem like the 500 series brought too much overall beyond PCI Express 4.0 readiness after it turned out the 400 series wasn't quite up to supporting this properly.
Suppose it depends on what Zen3 itself could bring with it's improvements on the CPU side.
AM4 and backwards compatibility probably factoring in including slotting a Zen3 into compatible bios updated X400's and X500's until next year if AM5 and a new socket is going to be a thing maybe allowing for further improvements by not needing the backwards compatibility support. (Moving beyond dual channel for memory might be something if that's not just for Rippers. PCI-Express 5.0 perhaps maybe more.)
EDIT: Improvements to chips and other components might perhaps allow for passive cooling as well instead of the little spinner, X79 board I used before had one of those which eh it's a thing.
Current one on the X500 is one of the Zen2 I/O dies isn't it that AMD used and now ASMedia has come up with something for support here with the X600 guess we shall see how it goes. once it's fully announced with some details on what it brings. 🙂

And we are still waiting B550 and A320...
The good point is that B450 and A320 bios have evolved a lot, when i see how much you can OC on a A320, i regret a bit to have bough a B450 only to get OC 20euro more is nearly half the price of the CPU lol.

if you want extra channels and extra pciexpress there is the other platform, the threadripper or intel x299.
Is not reasonable to think quad channel on consumer soon ( or triple x58 was cool ) and then having a monter 6-8 channel as higher end platform.

Kind of wish AMD would continue handling the chipset. I don't care much for ASMedia.

I kind of wished I could sail through Zen 3 on my MEG X570 Unify.. But I guess with USB 4.0 coming up and maybe more PCIE lanes X670 will make sense later on. We will see.

Not really a fan of Asmedia controllers, who makes the controllers (storage/USB) on AMD 570 MB.s?

Mixed I think but two of the USB's should go into the AMD controller far as I'm aware, USB 3.1 something I guess but Gen1, Gen2 or whatever I couldn't really say but I think the newer ones go via third party chips and additions such as Asmedia.
(There's some specs on it but it's also quite customizable by board partners how to use it.)
EDIT: Believe that also gives them a bit lower latency from what I've read.
And interesting to hear some of the tech going into some of these features as well. 🙂

Unrelated but what the hell happened to USB? How do you manage to mess up a "UNIVERSAL" port so bad? If you see a USB port these days, you have NO IDEA what it is capable of.

If what the article says about Asmedia not getting any orders for PCIe4-supporting chipsets is true, then Zen3 is likely not involved here at all. Even back in the FX days--Asmedia fabbed the chipsets--but AMD was always the designer and architect.
Here's the quote: "Although ASMedia has not obtained orders for AMD's X570 chipsets that supports PCIe Gen 4, the chipmaker continues to be the maker of AMD's B550 and A520 chipsets, the sources said."
So they are fabbing low-end chipsets for AMD, of course, but AMD is the designer--not Asmedia.

ASMedia AS3242 in some high-end motherboards and AS2462 in some M.2 NVMe enclosures which do support Gen 2x2, but I'd guess these will be surpassed by USB4 Gen 3 (20 Gbit/s) - or, most excitingly, encompassed by Gen 3x2 (40 GBit/s), which is essentially a slightly differently clocked ThunderBolt 3.
So in practice it goes like this:
Gen 1 - 5 Gbit/s
Gen 2 - 10 Gbit/s
And soon there will be:
Gen 3 - 20 Gbit/s
Gen 3x2 (TB3) - 40 Gbit/s
On the contrary - if you see 'Gen 1' then it's SuperSpeed 5 GBit/s , while 'Gen 2' is SuperSpeed+ 10 GBit/s. Ignore version numbers like 3.1 or 3.2, or single lane designator x1.
Dual-lane Gen 2x2 20 GBit/s (and Gen 1x2 10 Gbit/s) have never been implemented by major vendors like Intel or AMD. There are quite rare
