Such a disappointing card, basically AMD's 480 :\ I'm just gonna pick up a 780 now they've dropped in price.

Hilbert, you are testing in open air system? It's very possible than in closed case they could drop lower.

The card is one of the best. If you want the card to be as quiet as it can be you have to deal with lower clocks. Its the way it is. Before you play games put the card into uber mode not that big of a deal, or maybe water cool the card. Even if with buying a water block you are still saving money compered to buying a Titan.

never buys AMD, bunch of cheaters.

Why nobody mentioned what happens with the card on "Uber" mode? Does it explode or something? 😀 The temperature isn't a problem. After i've sold my 670, this card would cost me 150 euro, so i can buy one every year. Don't care about longevity.

Fan RPM goes way up increasing noise.

This and the temperature should be solved once the non-reference cards are out, right?

Why would you buy a Titan when you can buy a 780 and OC it or buy an OC'd card with a custom cooler and have it deliver better performance than a Titan but for a much lower price point. The 780 is now cheaper than the 290x too thanx to that well timed price drop. With their card only being downclocked by like 10%, the 290x doesn't have a lot of power left in it even if it was water cooled. I doubt the thing could be OC'd much any ways.

Hilbert, any chance you could slap on a different cooler such as arctic cooler if there is one or something like it that fits. So we can see how well they can cool the chip? Or does your card have to be sent back to AMD? Would be cool if you could do this (no pun intended) you would probably be one of the only online reviewers to do it.

this was actually mentioned in an nvidia presentation
Theres a surprise :P

I'd also like to know how the clocks are in standard PC case.

they have a point though

So what? People want their cards to melt? That's the stock cooler for you .. wait for aftermarket coolers or factory OC versions.

Its already been proven that the aftermarket cooler is fully to blame for this. Other sites have tested with other coolers and found large temp drops.

@Prod : no need to buy a Titan... a custom 780 with clock higher than 1000 Mhz is above Titan or 290X 😉

i think it's a pretty decent card to be honest. And well it'S the "quiet" mode and a sample card.

Nvidia does the same, but already at 70C. In that case it's only a few MHz, though, not hundreds.

This card really needs water, or a better heatsink.

Yup, im waiting for the customs, AMD really need to ditch those coolers, i don't understand it tbh, they make great cards like that, then shove a crappy cooler on em, its like someone spending thousands on a top end Haswell rig, then powering it all with a £20 PSU like a q-tec gold, you just wouldn't 😀

Update: Based on your feedback, I took the IceQ X2 cooler off the HIS Radeon R9 280X and stuck it on our R9 290 sample. Cooling was dramatically improved. The FurMark stress test maxed out at 76 degrees while the card never exceeded 63 degrees in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4. So it seems as expected the board partners will be able to solve the heat issues of the reference card.
The card really isn't that hot in reality. It's just a really poor reference cooler.
