i'm salivating over the prospect of a mobile R7...power consumption and thermals better than Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake...especially if they add the discrete mgpu... that would be the replacement for my Kaby Lake i-7 😉

iaf... the lower clocks and power consumption of ryzen are naturally suited for mobile. Threadripper rocked my world - as i didn't expect much really in the hedt arena, but i had always thought ryzen would be a damn good mobile solution. and if Intel and AMD were ever on a 1:1 price, i thought AMD would "win" mobile and Intel would "win" desktop. downclocking an i-7 7700 ought to be a crime, but Intel needed to do it to get it in my greedy, grubby mitts. playing with 7700k at work just pissed me off LOL

Yes Pinnacle Ridge should be AMD's 12nm refresh of Zen then in 2019 the 7nm refresh of Zen code named Matisse. Considering the 12nm LP process will only allow slightly higher frequencies and every so slightly better densities than the current 14nm process I don't hold out much hope that it will make much of an impact but you may see 10% performance gains out of Zen if they can get a smidge of IPC improvements to go with slightly higher clocks. For those who already bought into Ryzen the Zen 2 aka Matisse should be a huge upgrade, it is on the 7nm process that is geared for high frequencies and the density improvements should be very high.

Vega has low perf/watt so it will be a wash. A 4/6 quad coffee lake with a pascal chip will be faster and more power efficient.

Ravenridge next year looks really exciting i haven't used an apu since Richland and if it didn"t have the weird tdp walls it would have been a really fun overclocker and a good overclocker at that. I think with the am4 being a more broad socket it'll support much more power and overclocking.

It would be surprising if AMD managed to beat Intel+Nvidia in max performance, but for ultrabooks and such with nothing but a single chip (CPU+iGPU), it ought to provide a jolly performance/price ratio. Intel is still charging a lot for 4 core mobile chips, let alone 4C/8T, so AMD might find its place in the market. Vega could offer somewhat better perf/watt when it's not pushed to the sad max like in desktop video cards. But yeah, if you wallet is bottomless, I doubt AMD will be the prime choice any time soon.

its a mobile part, its not gonna be running at 1700mhz, probably around 800-1100mhz, at those speeds vega's efficency is fine, with ryzen being much more efficent than a intel chip in the sub 3ghz range, it will easily make up the difference not to mention the on die voltage regulators on ryzen mobile will improve efficency further compared to a discrete gpu. i'd estimate a 45-55W ryzen mobile part will sustain r3 1200 + rx 460~ levels of performance. Hopefully the OEMS don't cripple ryzen mobile like they did to carrizo (ie shipping junk with 1366x768 screens with single channel memory + junk discrete gpus).

what i was talking about was high performance laptops typically using i-7 (like mine). i did mention discrete mgpu so "gaming" (or rendering) class. i spent for performance, including nvidia mgpu. *any* mobile r-7 class ryzen will blow the roof over the similar, but core limited Intel cpu *downclocked* for mobile (like i-7 7700). they are still power pigs. all i-7 laptops have short battery life and need major engineering for silent cooling (or not so silent). an 8 core, 8 thread ryzen moble can modestly dial back power consumption and still out perform (especially rendering and transcoding) an Intel 4 core, 4 thread downclocked by 50%. we're not talking about the regular desktop chips, same architecture, downclocked, lower thermal throttle for mobile. the base chip like an r7 1700 has around 35% less draw than the i-7, with better thermals. this ain't rocket science.
