What's the point of this? 256bit, 2GB, i mean current 280(7950) have 3GB, 384bit can be overlocked past 280X performance...

It could make sense if it is much more efficient then it could have the same performance. The most worrying thing is the 2GB instead of 3. But then again this is just a rumor.

most 7950 have 2G only the latest one (based on 7970 pcb) have 3G

Rumors for Tonga varying.. im mostly think it is a replacement of 7870 with higher performance of the 7970 / 280's ... So middle wear gear for end 2014 . high end of Nvidia is just running with a 384bit bus / 3GB of memory. middle end is still running a 256bit bus with 2Go of memory.. High end of AMD is running a 512bit bus memory controller with 4GB ... ( i ofc dont speak about custom version for both brands ) .. For replace a middle range gpu's ..... should not be so bad.

Mate you need to do some fact checking and better research.... All HD 7950 are 3GB and are water down HD 7970 3GB. Only way a 7950 had 2gb to begin with if an AIB partner did a cheaper custom version. Thats how they originally launched. R9 280 is a 7950 3GB R9 280x is a 7970 GHZ 3GB 256bit is only a limit really at high resolutions against 384bit. As long as its a more efficient design in the gpu, it may not really effect and will be a cheaper gpu to produce. But I dont see this being the R9 280 replacement. Sounds more like a R9 270x replacement to be honest since its 2GB and 4GB variant.

Hey Hilbert, do you really mean R9 280 or R9 280x? Because of the 2048 shaders in the article, cause if it is replacing the 280 non-X at the same price with improved efficiency, then i´ll grab one for sure.

I think the rumor about the Tonga GPU packing 2048 ALUs is wrong! The Tonga GPU is very likely smaller than Tahiti with less ALUs and a narrower memory controller, measuring ~250 mm^2, and it will likely consume ~100 Watts under load while performing in the same league as Tahitis. It will be based on GCN 2.0 and I doubt the guys at AMD have been sitting around doing nothing for two years and a half with the vanilla GCN micro architecture.

^^ you slept through GCN 1.1, Hawaii, Bonaire??

so i take it this is just a more power friendly version while offering the same performance. if so i hope its as efficient as the 750ti shows to be

it should be a low end version who is able to to replace the performance of an old high end version. - but cost, price will be way different ( between 150-200$ ) - Better efficiency energy ( well its not like Thaiti was bad, performing at full level between 160-190W max for a 250W PCB board power ( consuming under 200W, when the TDP or TBP ( Typical Board Power ), was set at 250W .. Its not a response to the 750TI ( who should be way under that in term of performance ) ..

4GB Tonga with DP1.2a for freesync i would buy, maybe we see some more features support for dx12
