So it appears that TRX40 owners like myself are going to get screwed. Way to go, AMD. I'm sure the other HEDT adopters are really enthused as well.

I really dislike the Epyc naming scheme. So full of unnecessary irregularities, and searching for products by product number is difficult.

They screwed us Threadrripper owners with both x399 AND TRX40. Epyc fail

Just like 9900k, 10900k and 12900k uses 3 different sockets (11900k was ignored on purpose) 7980xe, 9980xe and 10980xe was just the same thing in a different package with a bit of factory overclocking, so only really one CPU for the same socket. The super HEDT Intel 56 core abomination is also only a 1 generation socket too. It sucks but I am not really surprised, the 3000 series 32 and 64 core Threadripper is still damned fast for us who plays Cinebench though.

Yep, X399 here, I bought in on the 2nd gen and that's where my upgrade options stopped.

I really think both AMD and Intel intend to treat an current/future HEDT systems as single generation. For AMD, they're trying to do more to segment between the PRO line and the less expensive TRX40. FWIW, I've worked with companies that bought in on a few Threadripper workstations but didn't want to spend on the Threadripper PRO. Giving the PRO line an upgrade path might do enough to incentivize companies to spend extra on the more expensive systems. Plus Vendors can lock in the PRO lineup chips just like EPYC (AMD PSB), so AMD and vendors would consider that a win in killing a lot of the 3rd party sales/reselling later. PSB is a positive for security (assuming you're a business) but it all sucks for home users and/or homelabbers 🙁

my MSI creator TRX40 was the "chosen one" of motherboards 🙁 lanes lanes everywhere ! but the cpus still "beta" threadripper frankly way behind compared to ryzen 5000

the truth (although it hurts) is the HEDT market, which was pro/AM is now PRO/am. i was an early adopter way back in x79 days when there was plenty for a enthusiast who loves to game to get from it (and subsequent) platforms. but a lot changed on the way to Zen 2, especially (film) production companies figuring out they could do twice as much twice as fast for less money than Xeon. the move past trx40 narrowed the cost differential (albeit still huge) but introduced far more compelling-to-pros features. outside of Hollywood the so-called content creators also discovered the same time-as-money savings for their transcoding and editing. so the numbers changed to reflect the new market and old TR rigs (like mine) are sold like guitar amps. so i went to 5950x, which for my needs was plenty enough tho' i do miss that sweet 4 channel memory.
