It is interesting, as AMD does not directly support the earlier chipsets for Zen2--that's done strictly by the mboard vendor--as apparently we see here.
It was similar with previous updates - due to AGESA getting bigger, many motherboards had to undergo a big overhaul of their UEFI to fit it in their 16mb flash ROM; if I'm not mistaken, MSI's MAX models have a 32mb flash ROM. AMD finally released a reduced size AGESA after a while and there must be some space left on older B450 boards for that reason, but their support may take more time for that very same reason.
Except most of the updated MB are high-range x370 MBs with more features, more 3rd party controllers, more code and more useless graphics and animation (and of course RGB crapware). Cheaper models are not so updated although having less features, less 3rd party controller, less graphics, so less code.
AMD microcode are just a few MBs, everything else is MB and OEM stuff.
Meanwhile half of the MB models of all OEMs are stuck with AGESA 1.0.0.3ABBA (ComboPi).
Off topic but I am on 1004 with my ASUS X570-E Gaming, but I found voltage wise 1003 ABBA was the best for my board for whatever reason; when I updated to 1004 my voltages gone back up to 1.3-4 again.
Will be interesting to see if 1005 brings it back down.
@SpajdrEX I was asking because Saturday morning I've looked at MSI support website and didn't had the latest version, but right after I asked about it, checked again and there it was.
Went and flashed my motherboard.
Now, didn't had the time to explore those new features. What were they?
I was busy with reinstalling OS on a NVMe drive and, as usual, each BIOS update deletes the GRUB2 option in the BIOS boot section.
Time to chroot into my *Nix install and reinstall and regenerate GRUB2.
"Happy times" ahead!
Isn't MSI one of the fastest for bios updates for AMD though?
Long as the bios itself or the chip for it has enough storage size the AGESA module should slot right in and then the manufacturer bios data so you get the core AMD improvements on top of whatever the manufacturer has. 🙂
Although long term bios maintenance even on supported hardware well that can be a bit more problematic but the board itself should support it at least and the way this all works and integrates with the rest of the bios.
EDIT: AMD, MAD.
Why does that acronym tangle up so easily. 😛
(Micro Advanced Devices...eh it works. Haha.)
I really hope they get the aibs to fix the bios size nonsense , it really doesn't make any sense why they need so much memory, the entire system software for the original macs was under 4 mb....
and even if they must to have fancy graphics why not put them on some nand instead, its not like its very expensive these days.
This is one of the first places it's going to show up 🙂 Asrock am4 Bioses https://shop.jzelectronic.de/news.php?id=1587057420&sw= Here you can download Asrock x570 Taichi bios 3.0. It's not out yet on Asrock.com 🙂
