It already has, from a certain pov. 7900X is significantly cheaper than 6950X, yet beats it in power. So, a better 10-core costs a bit more than half of the previous one. That can be called a price drop. It wouldn't be this way if AMD hadn't pulled through.

In certain benchmarks the basic 8-core, 2-channel Ryzen 7 1800X equals or beats 7900X... I can imagine the 12-core, 4-chanel 'ripper will crush it in anything but poorly written games.

The fact itself that AMD can set these prices and still earn a profit shows how outrageously expensive Intel stuff has been in the past few years. Yay for monopoly, right?

It's the secret of Intel's success so *hush*...Larrabee does come to mind now they're going on about gluing cores together...16 old-school Pentiums glued together in a ringbus to create a mystical 1Tflops HPC GPU, anyone? Think not LOL...they salvaged Xeon Phi out of the LRB project, but only after shoveling billions of dollars into the consumer GPU pit.

yes intel overpriced cpus for long long time and a great example will be the i7's 4 core from 2600 to 7700 the die was getting smaller but the price was rising, although when it comes to higher core counts it seems that amd's multiple smaller dies is much more cost efficient than intel's monolithic approach so far so in general it seems that amd can afford a lot lower prices and still be profitable

Technology allows lower per core price even at high core count.
At this point:
If intel wants higher income, they either have to find new market as they own current one almost entirely. Or increase prices which increases risk that customers will look for alternative.
If AMD wants higher income, they need to persuade intel crowd to buy AMD, as there is huge number of potentially new customers. Or they can increase prices, but there is market sentiment in place. People are used to use intel. So if AMD is not cheaper + better alternative, people will simply sit in their comfort zone and buy another intel.
Thereofre it is logical to make high volume of cheaper chips as there is market share to be gained and it disrupts mentioned market sentiment problem.
And if you can sell 4 in one package with EPYC, even better. 🙂

I hope so. Id love to have 8 core TR with quad channel. But a fantastic upgrade from my X79.
IDC, I love the look of quad channel memory setup and dont wanna leave it when I go ryzen.
Id be happy as pickles for a 6 core/12 threads TR setup.

You can get 18c/36t Core X99 compatible xeon E5-2696v3 with 3.8Ghz boost for 800USD sometimes even 720$ on ebay, there is tons of it right now..
Without any tweaking it has over 2400CB, I wonder using gaming motherboard that can force 3.8 turbo boost for 100% all the time and with sligh fsb overclock to 4Ghz or higher.

I wanted to get myself X399 threadripper based system, but now after discovering this Xeon E5-2696v3 I wonder if this is cheaper and can prolong my system til 2020

If I had a grand for a CPU I'd go for this instantly. No kidding. If it would not have cost me 700 USD to replace a CPU,MB,RAM I would have went with the i7 7700k. When my board went out on me I settled for the same platform since it handles 4k at ease. I don't see a need for anything more. I think 140 USD vs 700 USD, is a no brainer when you have 32 gig DDR3 2400 and a i7 5775c. I could not bring myself to replace that stuff if I didn't have to.

well i am still "stack" on 1080p mostly because my budget is really not fit for 4k capable card + monitor but i am fine i will eventually get there now i was on a similar condition few years back about (2) with my 3770k the 6700k and 6600k where new and the 4770/4790 4600 where phasing out the thing was that Z77 motherboard where nowhere to be found new so i dived into the used market and grabbed the first healthy z77 motherboard i could get my hands on my other option was to sell my 3770k on the same price an 6600k was selling give or take and buy a new motherboard to work with and keep the rest although since i found a replacement i choose to keep my 3770k sure is not a 6700 or 7700 but still i would consider the 6600 a side-grade at best
