Yeah, I've seen this mentioned in a couple of reviews, where disabling SMT improved the performance quite significantly, unlike on Intel, where the difference isn't that large.
Good observation...;) In the early days for Intel, enabling SMT used to dramatically lower performance, in some cases. I'd forgotten all about that...

The reviews disagree with your opinion. They state as a fact that a good chunk cheaper i5 with 4/4 beats it in games.
Huh? The review here certainly didn't say that, nor did HH say that. That's all *you*...;)

Before you two get too out of hand, I am going to ask you to stop now.

Think maybe this could be solved with an updated scheduler?

@ eclap - I'd wait for the Ryzen 5, the 1600X or the 1400X will be the better gaming chips. Less heat = more overclockable The Ryzen core is a good one, of that there is little doubt now, so I think AMD deserve a lot of credit for bringing out a CPU architecture that's this competitive with Intel.

Chill dude, I'm not getting involved in anything.

Thank you Hilbert Hagedoorn for the awesome review keep It up.

Great review, Hilbert. Like others said, investigating switching off SMT is probably worth it. I also wonder whether or not that has an impact on overclocking. Get well soon, boss!

Possibly

Ryzen looks much better then the previous AMD architectures, that is certain. There seem to be a few niggles. I guess I'll just keep waiting to see what 1600x offers and decide then. The motherboard will have some to mature until then, too.

So fix smt bug for gaming. I'll just disable smt for gaming then. Yeah maybe no more smt bug then so 1600x might look better.

Wonder how it overclocks with STM disabled?

Seems like they've got some updates to push out the door. This sort of stuff is exactly why I'm patiently waiting it out.

Thanks HH, superb review as usual. I can't explain how much I missed competition

It is also slower in gaming than a 4/4 i5 costing a lot less, so really depends on what you want to use it for. The reviews disagree with your opinion. They state as a fact that a good chunk cheaper i5 with 4/4 beats it in games.
Don't know about other reviews yet, but almost no one uses a rig solely for gaming. The simple fact that the 1800X outperforms the 10/20 6950X is just staggering.

Nice review, HH! Will you add "percentile" numbers to this review later, or other reviews in the future, so we can see which components are more likely to give stutters?

I'm really eager to see some update on Hilbert side with all this "SMT off/on" stuff.

Yes - I'll give that a look when working on the 1700X review tomorrow, sure.

Great CPU, too bad the gaming performance is not blasting (and I don't mean the odd 1080p numbers), but then again neither is it with Intel and it's the game's fault for not taking advantage of the extra cores. At 1440p almost all CPUs in the charts have the same FPS... Again though, good job AMD, super value. Finally competition again after many, many years.

The First thing I though when i saw the game benchmarks was SMT, new cpu, new architecture, im pretty sure most games are thread driven, so if the order the SMT cores on the queue is wrong it might make games use 2 core threads and 2 SMT ones, making games run much worse. The review was great btw, I have wait a long time for AMD to come back, i guess is time to get myself a 1700x!
