Well i had my doubts but they have been smashed, Ryzen is really an amazing cpu in almost every aspect! Well done AMD!!!
Too bad the 1700 wasn´t on the review, it´s the only one i really care.
Personally i ´m thinking about the possibility of buying a 1700 but seeing that every cpu returns the same performance in 1440p, it seems that after a certain point, more speed or more cores don´t matter... If that´s the case then i´m better buying the 7600K because i have no use for an 8 core cpu monster...
Also i´m a little disappointed by the lack of 4K benches but it seems we had some minor health issues not to mention a lack of time.

That would depend on the air cooler quality really. I did check with the Noctua included in the kit and 4.0 GHz on all eight cores was running fine. I think i also had it at 4.1 GHz on air but have not done intensive testing on such frequencies. Temps where in the high seventies with voltage set at auto.

For a brand new CPU priced at 560€ I expected better gaming performances, this is the flagship CPU and it struggles against most I5/I7. I'ld like to see some Arma 3, GTA or Unreal Engine 4 games benchmarks as well, these are the games people actually do play and might want to upgrade for.

Very nice results. It seems to me that beyond 1080p with the 1080 and Ryzen r7 1800x really shines. Also it seems like my 4790k isnt obsolete just yet being only a couple of frames difference in the games tested.

This CPU is great for professionals who can use all those threads, but my main use is gaming, so I'm keeping my 4790k for at least one more year (future 6 core Intel? Zen+?)

Great review as always Hilbert! Looks like ill be getting a 1700x for my B-day in April. Excited for a new MB/Proc/Ram setup!
Side note, wonder how much Intel will drop the price on the 6590x or 6900k now.

This CPU needed to blow Intel out of the water in every respect and instead it just brings a CPU that does some stuff better, does some stuff worse and is a bit good deal cheaper than Intels comparative CPU the 6900K, but given that Intel have a dozen steps between their best and their worst CPUs why would someone who already has an Intel setup (like me) opt for the additional expense of £200-£300 on going for the new AMD chip when I could just get a 6800K which comes close enough to not make a difference.
Everyone is patting AMD on the back for releasing a CPU that brings them back in to the contest but given that Intel have owned the market now for almost 4 or 5 years releasing a chip that is good enough to compete isn't going to cut it, they needed something that blew Intel away and this just doesn't do that and that's BEFORE Intel decide whatever prcing action they are going to take on their CPU lines.

Ok, after reading a few more reviews, it's a solid workload cpu but it gets spanked by Intel in gaming.
Not for me. Now I just have to decide whether I go with the 7700k or 6800k. Shame, I wanted this to be a good gaming cpu but it clearly is not.

Great Value...Wait Hilbert, what? AMD surpasses the intel 6950X in Handbrake and all you can say is great value? Utterly nonsense.
The AMD processor is more than three times cheaper, that is not only great value but more than excellent, so this conclusion is totally bs imho. This might be the greatest hardware release this decade and certainly the best CPU released. AMD performing toe to toe on intel is what we needed, surpassing that is just amazing.

Yeah, I've seen this mentioned in a couple of reviews, where disabling SMT improved the performance quite significantly, unlike on Intel, where the difference isn't that large.

Good review. Keep up the good work! I can't wait to read the reviews of the 4 and 6 core Ryzens. I think the CPU is goot, but i wait at leas for the summer or for the next stepping to purchase one.

One thing I remember from my nVidia days is how rather CPU-dependent nVidia was--ie, nV optimized its GPU drivers heavily for the cpu. Faster cpus often seemed to help nVidia frame-rate scores more than they helped nV competitors who tried to stay off the CPU as much as possible. If that is still the case, then relative to the 1920x1080 gaming performance I'd say nVidia has simply yet to optimize its drivers for Ryzen, yet. And then there are the compilers...when the Athlon first shipped the performance was rather lackluster because of that...after the AMD compilers were put to use widely, the Athlon zoomed out front of Intel in every category. It will be interesting to see what changes are in store as Ryzen use widens dramatically...game developers, too, used to optimizing for Intel for their performance, will surely play a part in optimizing for Ryzen. Even so, for > 1920x1080 gaming, even now Ryzen is unsurpassed in value for the dollar, imo.

It is also slower in gaming than a 4/4 i5 costing a lot less, so really depends on what you want to use it for.
The reviews disagree with your opinion. They state as a fact that a good chunk cheaper i5 with 4/4 beats it in games.

Frankly it turned better than I expected.
Except for power consumption. Being a "lower" power CPU it eats the same as 140w Intel 6950k...
Anyway this all is not enough to convince me to flee Intel. So, for now for me - waiting for 10nm.
