Not necessarily. RDNA2 was a major leap in performance, but so is Xe.

No, please. Make it with Zen3, so at least a 5600U. Or minimum to be mainstream with 8core, so the 5800U :P AMD would get free marketing, Surface will get extra high performance with satisfied customers

Guess we will see in a few weeks but my guess is AMD will have Intel beaten and well beaten, looking at the number of planned builds Intels claiming 40 + AMD is showing 150+ the guys that build these machines have had prior information we are not privy too.

True but is the part that makes sense if you're involved with the mentioned above. Unless you want to waste 4x more of your time using the "latest" mobile cpu also presented above. Generally a 1060/2060/3060 from nvidia (not to add to much to the overall cost) outperforms any mobile cpu by a mile. Not to mention your laptop runs much cooler when using the gpu. For example encoding, the gpu is used about 10% while providing a 4x faster encoding time. Try that on cpu and you'll have it throttling, slow as fk and your laptop to sound like a helicopter.

But thats not in a thin form factor, having used a MSI games centric laptop in the past I can attest to its great performance provided you dont mind toting round a couple of kilos of Laptop and putting up with at best a couple of hours battery life, these laptops are for whole day use and portability

That's fine with me. Could be Zen1. I hate every small netbook or surface is intel and has crappy perfomance, storage and IGP.

I was looking at hacked mobile processors with adapters for my Haswell as replacement and while a tad obscure, performance seems good. I wonder if these CPUs would work well in a desktop OC'ed to the MAX?

i have a thin form factor rtx 2070 laptop, i had an 1070 thin form factor before that. the difference in battery life with better screen, gpu, and even cpu (intel) was about 2x. i couldn't even game on battery on the 1070 for one hour at the usual settings. the new 30xx mobile and the rocket lake (no mobile alder for a year) will be even better than that and later this year the Ryzen/Navi mobile with more threads at lower power (and a few console tricks as well) with better for the dollar gaming will be better still. the slim power laptop is pure money with some of the best profit margins in each manufacturer's line. i have definitely built better systems for less money but that isn't an issue in this market segment. the sff laptop has driven some of the largest changes in the computing industry over the last five years. the numbers show that and the numbers also show that gamers are willing to pay the price premium for gaming on the road (or in a dorm). and although mobile has the longest lagtime per generation it has increasingly been outselling both oem and enthusiast builds by wider margins each year. the best part is miners aren't interested in mobile gpus
