Another Cinebench only cpu 😛

you really need to go look at datacentres and the massive array of server racks they have, comprised sometimes of thousands of cores. this sort of technology is designed to reduce the number of racks needed, in turn reduce cost and power usage greatly.

Disappointed that you didn't find a Task Manager view with 128 threads 🙂

The clocks on these are pretty low, even for such a large core count. That I/O die has got to consume a good bit of power, and i'm wondering if it can be clock gated as well as if it was within the CPU. All those memory controllers, and infinity fabric can't just be switched off and on when needed i suspect, neither can the PCIe lanes. It may not have to clock very high, but if the system controller base clock is tied to the memory clock still, it will be running quite fast.

Will it pass 100 fps in any 1080p title with an RTX? 😀 These clocks are for 8k gaming. 🙄

Seems like if they manage to pull of 5nm, they could fit another 4 dies on the package. Imagine that: having an additional 32 cores, with a total of 96 cores. This CPU could be a real winner for AMD, especially if they manage to pull out quad-socket motherboards (not sure this is going to happen, though).

The clocks are pretty typical for a product like this. A CPU like this is built to handle either massively parallel tasks or to be proficient at handling dozens of small individual tasks, neither of which especially cares about clock speed. This is why ARM has been so appealing in the server market: sometimes all you need is a ton of crappy CPU cores for a low price, low wattage, and low physical volume, that are still capable of reducing overhead.

How about things like Folding@Home? 3D rendering? Photo Editing? Video Editing? This thing would tear through those tasks easily, remember this is for sever farms and data centres not to run Crysis at 1080p :P

Those new 49" 32:9 monitors finally have a real purpose LMAO :P

Awesome news , competition is very strong at the moment for data centers in the servers department and AMD Rome Epic seems as the best choice going forward as per digitimes AMD it's gaining market share and a lot of momentum. - https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20190328PD200.html

Kinda gets me to wonder: what if you could run Crysis at 1080p on a dual-socket system with a pair of these CPUs... through a software renderer? Obviously you'd have to run the graphics at lowest settings, but that would be pretty interesting if it became playable.

This is apparently an engineering sample...as such the clocks will likely be higher in the shipping cpus. But it's the software that makes the difference, as 64/128 cores can clock much slower than 32/64, for instance, and with software that uses the cores the slower-clocked cpu will smoke the significantly higher-clocked cpu with half the number of cores, etc., while using less power, too. The ballgame changes dramatically in this cpu arena. It's bygone days for single-threaded cpus...;)

This CPU is a big hit from AMD, its likely that datacenters will benefits from this type of cpus a lot, its not for us, but imo its a very good stand by amd into attaching intel in the business side.

It is not that long ago when we used intel's P4 and AMD's Athlon XP Single core CPUs. This is like having 250~300 of such CPUs in single package. Now imagine having that computational power back in the day in some cutting edge CPU rendering application. All that time we spent waiting for image rendering, encoding, ... I just love how things move forward.

I wonder if we'll see something like this in desktop form? A 128T Threadripper would be amazing for grid computing. Never really sure how far AMD will go nowadays (a 16 core desktop CPU was considered ludicrous back in 2017, and AMD followed it up with a 32 core one a year later...).

Just because you have no idea how to use this many cores doesn't mean there's not countless applications for it. Not everything is about your limited needs.

I'm pretty certain we will. The real question in my opinion is will it be the first generation Threadripper Zen2, or the 2nd generation Threadripper Zen2+(or whatever it will be called). They could only give us better 32 core threadrippers then what is currently out, for better prices, and no one would really have a big problem with that, and then next generation, release the 64 core version and inbetween, just like Zen to Zen+

I have to agree with @Hilbert Hagedoorn "So far all it pretty interesting.".
