it would be nice to have the BOM of these cards ,it would give us a better view of what the "reduced margins" means.

Looks like AMD feels the need to do pricing stunts to move these cards. I just checked my favorite online store and the cheapest RX 7900 XT is now 749 euro, and the cheapest RTX 4070Ti Super is 889 euro, but those are the exceptions. Most of the available models are priced much higher (AMD between 779 and 949 euro & NVIDIA between 899 and 1149 euro).

usually 699 dollar is before tax, if you add vat in europe you get to 840dollar, around 770 euro indeed. I went to check on generic amazon and 770 seemed in line with expectations to me. The 499 7800xt is 560eur indeed

If the XTX hits $700 (or 750€), I won't wait for next gen, will upgrade from 6800XT. 7900XT at $700 is still very meh. Needs to drop a lot more. Maybe at $550 it will start to become interesting...

BOM alone won`t give you the full picture, because the margins also have to pay for all the R&D and for all the software the cards need and use. Just look at Nvidia, not only are we paying for the hardware, we are also paying for all the software, because RT and DLSS are not a gift from them...

I paid 710€ for my current card...

I like to keep my hardware for a few years so i can get the best value out of it, but if the XTX drops to 750€, then that would be difficult to resist. Of course this would also mean that the value of my 6950XT would drop like a giant boulder...

I can't even sell my GTX 1080 for 200€... despite paying over 650 on it when it was new. Unfortunately I had no backup card during mining craze... when at some point it jumped close to 1000!! Sigh... But it "paid" for itself fully in the shape of thousands of hours of entertainment for me, so no hard feelings. I might even keep it as a souvenir, the best value GPU I ever had, it was a monster of performance for several years. Still runs game just fine in 1080... p (pun intended), but that's about it.

It`s curious but i`m on the same boat regarding selling my previous card, a 1080Ti. I`m asking 250€ and i`m even willing to accept 200€ but no one wants it. And the funny part is that i had a previous offer of 270€ for it that i had to turn down because i had to return the first 6950XT that i bought because of coil whine and i didn`t want to be without a GPU. But i don`t care much about it because the card was free, so i also don`t mind keeping it, even if i no longer use it. As for my current 6950XT, it stings thinking about the money i`m going to lose on it, but that`s how it goes with PC hardware.

they have to do this for many reasons. “stunts” are the norm in sales. is Nvidia any less stagy? this pretty much is chicken and eggs. legally they have to have the shareholders’ interests at all times. that means that the pricing has to be as profitable as possible at all times. not always pretty and it feeds a trope about electronics. the real difference here is Nvidia has gone with a cheaper to produce pcb& vrms, but has a more expensive uArch process. there’s no way to know until months from now whether this is more profitable but I suspect that they wouldn’t change anything unless it was. for AMD, they have to both chase and hunt the tiger, and hunting is an expensive pastime. the happiness they generate at this price point is offset partially by sour grapes

I must admit that price would be to high and risky for me too. I would go for a new 7600 instead it is a fair bit more money but, 6 years is a lot for a GPU and driver support might begin to be a problem, together with worn out fans and dried up paste and thermal pads. I would not sell my spare Vega 64 to someone I know and also not for that price.

Performance is still the same right?

Sapphire Pulse 7900XT still costs 750€ here and the 7900GRE currently holds the 599€ price.

Do some of you ever talk about anything else than gpu prices ? You nag nvidia cause new features cost extra, you nag amd for not dropping low enough...... go outside and play with sticks, it's free.

You are right, but price is a major problem, price have been X2 to X3 during covid and decreased only around 5% after, energy cost twice since the ukraine war (for me it is around 700 Euro by month for the car and house right now), new taxes from EU for many neighbor country, and incoming going down for the 1st time since WW2... When you add everything, there is not too much left in the end for GPU that is overpriced. Personaly, i understand them, i have bought a 2nd hand RX 6700XT "for waiting", but technicaly, because of all above and the fact that it permit display and work in 4K and gaming in 2K, i will still keep it some years.

With all the time they spend complaining, they could have earned the money to buy the cards if they did something lucrative instead 😛!

Yeah, like money just comes from having extra free time. I have a job, it's full time. Around this parts, that's the limit anyone is allowed to hire you. Perhaps in USA one can get a 3rd or 4th job, work for 21 hrs a day, destroy their health and gain a bit more money, but here it's simply not allowed. And no serious employers risk breaking the law. And that job is simply not enough to buy 1000€ GPUs, beside everything else needed for living. Be shocked, the average salary in my country is 600€, and we're actually having it better than many neighbors. One such neighbor gets bombs dropped on them every day since 2 years ago... so I'm happy with what we have, even if it's not much. Anyway, looking forward for more GPU price drops, as well as all the chatter around the forums, including from complainers ! ;-)

If the price/performance ratio is bad, just shut up, man up and earn some more money. I am sure that will fix everything.

Don't forget about inflation, 650 dollars in 2016 is equivalent to 830 dollars now. Add in the extra memory on the newer cards and the added complexity of the PCBs and need for additional components on the board and cost price of the newer GPUs almost matches what they currently ask for them. Yes, the original price of the RTX 4080 was way too high and you can quite genuinely accuse NVIDIA of price gouging, but at 999 dollars it does come close to equivalence (especially taking into account rising costs of labor, manufacturing, chip production, tariffs etc)

Meanwhile they release low end 7600XT at an absurd price of 400€. For that price I would expect at least the second fastest GPU they would produce, not the slowest. Prices need to come down more, but it won't take much longer: economical crisis is close, soon people will not have money to buy overpriced hardware.

Well, you can always eat sawdust if you really cherish PC gaming. That seems to be the mindset of some >1000€ card owners, unfortunately...

This thread is literally about the price drop of a card. Considering everything has gotten more expensive too, debate around hobbies and the buy in for them is a fair thing to have. Value is an important metric for most people
