Mantle must take on new capabilities and evolve beyond mastery of the draw call. It will continue to serve AMD as a graphics innovation platform available to select partners with custom needs. The Mantle SDK also remains available to partners who register in this co-development and evaluation program. However, if you are a developer interested in Mantle "1.0" functionality, we suggest that you focus your attention on DirectX® 12 or GLnext.
Does this read like obituary or what... What's the right way to read this?

"DX12 and the upcoming GL next made our API obsolete." Or at least it sounds like it...

it also says this (not copy pasted)
Raja Koduri is Vice President of Visual and Perceptual Computing at AMD. His postings are his own opinions and may not represent AMD’s positions, strategies or opinions. - See more at: http://community.amd.com/community/amd-blogs/amd-gaming/blog/2015/03/02/on-apis-and-the-future-of-mantle#sthash.0tEPbpkR.dpuf
So it seems they got it covered might they change their minds lol

Even if that is true, why would you run R.I.P. article? Also, they finally release SDK and then they point you to DX12 instead...Jesus! I know there is some logic behind this, I just cant find it.

Mr. Raja posted his random thoughts on Mantle because he had some free time on his hands? Riiiiight...

Mantle SDK is not available to public.

its about to be... or maybe not
Mantle’s definition of “open” must widen. It already has, in fact. This vital effort has replaced our intention to release a public Mantle SDK, and you will learn the facts on Thursday, March 5 at GDC 2015.

In other words they'll drop support real soon so they can cut back on costs. There's also nothing "open" about it so far.

Mantle is either very similar to DirectX 12 or OpenGL Next. AMD obviously knew about both those APIs and that it'd be impossible to push an AMD specific API no matter the resources.

I bet that they don't actually have resources to optimise drivers for all three APIs. Master of none? Nvidia doesn't have to worry about that.

It's understandable though, while Nvidia and Intel will only have to support 2 api's, AMD will have to work with 3 if they don't try and phase out Mantle. I'm sure they work they have already done will help with DX12 & GL Next though. Edit: Pretty much said the same as above lol. Reading it again though i've released they are saying they are no longer releasing the public sdk.

I wish AMD could finish something. I mean everything seems half made, unfinished, sometimes rushed. They take their sweet time to do things on everything. Mantle is DOA already. AMD hasnt really showed its capalities or really supported across their lineup.

I'm not that up to date regarding mantle, but what does mantle offer above '1.0' functionality? Because, if they say the programers should refer to dx12 for mantle '1.0', what does mantle 2.0 bring?

So AMD finally do The Best Thing in History. Now we Have DX12/oGL Next and that's a Next-gen Mantle and Full Hardware Radeon Utilisation on every API essential to Gamers. Like Nike ;-) Just Do It. And there will be no API fragmentation -> its better for Developers and finally for Us Gamers 😀 Great news

So why did they even bother to develop Mantle? Why did they waste their time/money to do something that will die pretty soon, because I`m very sure that they knew about the development of the DX12 but they did continue for the sake of the marketing.

I'm wondering the same thing, what does mantle offer more than an gcn-optimized dx12?

Well they managed to have people believe MS developed DX12 and a working demonstration a month after mantles announcement, and some others that DX12 is a reskinned mantle. So there's that..

It doesn`t offer nothing more, otherwise AMD will share with us.Instead of developing Mantle they were in better position if they worked with Microsoft on DX12,but from what I`ve seen, the announcement of Mantle was like a slap on MS face and thats not good for long term business.

I believe that MS was working for a long time on DX12,actually when DX12 was released nV and MS rep. said that they were working close for the past 4 years on DX12,and maybe thats why AMD develop Mantle, just to make ppl believe that DX12 is Mantle reskinned, just my 2 cents. The only effect that AMD had on Microsoft, was to force it to announce the DX12.

M$$$ was forced to hurry the development of DX12. Mantle was a "open path",the begining of Dx12.Now is obsolete, because DX12 & OpenGLNext will be mainstream.

DX12 was going to be released on Windows 10 anyway so AMD`s Mantle didn`t forced the development of anything, all they manage to force was the announcement of the DX12,thats all.

Until recently AMD really had no clue about DX12 - that's the only way to make sense out of why they decided to go with the whole Mantle initiative "The computer industry has benefited over the years from the constant updating of DirectX. Over and over again a new DirectX has refreshed the industry; new graphics cards need more powerful processors and more RAM. But there will be no DirectX 12.That's it. To our knowledge there are no plans for DirectX 12 If someone wants to correct me - wonderful." AMD - No DirectX 12
