I wonder if freesync would work with one of those chinese 1440p monitors with passthrough board.

One of my 144hz monitor is connected to a DP port. It's flawless really. Even the sound work perfectly. My 2 others are also at 144hz, but on dual-DVI. DP has many nice features like daisy chain support and sound transport. HDMI fall quick when talking abouth bandwith, but HDMI 1.4 and over can do Ethernet connection between components, which is usefull. Anyway, it's nice to see an open format soon to be release. G-Sync is way too expensive and vendor limited.

It's hard to say it's nearly the same, Nvidia's method gets a precise timing because the monitor and gpu are directly communicating. AMD's method extrapolates out to get the timing meaning there is a possibility that wildly erratic fps such as what you get with games won't be supported. Still be great for video though.

The monitor needs to support DP at a higher refresh than 60hz. My VG248QE does 144hz on DLDVI and only 60 on DP. When you've upgraded it to G-Sync, it does 144hz on DP *shrug* As for current monitors supporting it, very doubtful without a firmware upgrade and when's the last night a company has released a firmware upgrade for a computer monitor?
