This "thing" is made for attain the ExaFlops ( 1000 Petaflops ), for supercomputers, today supercomputers achieve at best 50 PetaFlops. The question in reality is not much this APU, this was a design example, the thing is how they can combine it in a system for achieve it. This was point of the presentation for IEEE. Here's the original image with the explanation about the off chips memory package, the cabinet network ..etc . http://www.bitsandchips.it/cache/550x502-equal_images_2015_08_01_AMD-exascale.png

after the fiasco of the last 2 gen, AMD should do something really exeptional to just get attention... despite sounding good this doesn't seem exeptional.

You want to buy an ExaFlops supercomputer ? This thing is not made for desktop, the gpu units surely dont have rop, tmu's, they are just there for computing. Anyway, the design with HBM2, a gpu cores + a CPU + Nvram should be just enormous even for workstation computing...

I have nothing against AMD , but all the time , you hear about a beast coming and when time comes you find a little cat !

No matter what way you cut it, this EHP looks to be a beast. Only two questions remain. Can it run Batman and will it be of practical use for researchers?

I'm pretty sure AMD has mostly learned their lesson. But, they're still banking on GPGPUs, which isn't a bad thing but software is still far behind from effectively supporting that. Modern APUs could probably outperform an i7 if software revolved around HSA and OpenCL, but that's an unrealistic expectation, and the products perform poorly as a result.

nope but this is like looking a GT championship's race, you will not bought a GT1 but a win in this discipline will boost sale for years on the winning company. not so long away AMD where good at this discipline, and even last century it was the top of the art in pro CPU... but it was before. the main goal of this exercice is to said "hey we have done that, you know we can handle your bussiness and be your reliable partner". A green chameleon have done it and is in nearly every workstation right now... a blue man have done it too and are now in neary all server CPU... right now AMD try to save it's credibility and show the company's "savoir faire", but now the race is no more tripartite (i don't think that they have assimilated this data, as NVidia btw), and i don't think this will be enough as HBM2 will be with all competitor. About batman, yes i think so, just the emulator to be build 1st 😛c1: lol

Or with added rumors people's expectations become unrealistic each time?! Bulldozer, Mantle, Fury sure sound beastly and they may very well be in certain aspects however why fault AMD for deliberately trying their own thing? What fun wound it be if all alternatives were equal on CPU/GPU/TDP/FPS and Features? If anything, AMD has had the biggest balls/spirit pushing through these tough years, especially in what seems an already very well established market. Anyway, it's not like Intel doesn't have it's own share of problems in markets where ARM/Qualcomm dominates like a Bo$$. nVidia's fragile glory could also suffer at any given moment, for all it takes is a wrong decision and/or a solid product release cycle from AMD. Next thing you know that shiny crown has been lost and the battle continues. So, enjoy your gaming and make good friends that's all that matter in the end.

This isn't intended for domestic use. This isn't even intended for large enterprise datacentre use. This is intended to allow AMD to soak up some of that sweet US taxpayer money following the recent announcement for the push to build an exascale supercomputer to get one over on the Chinese. The official line is that it will be used for modelling the aerodynamics of future space vehicles and climate modelling, but really it's just a pissing contest.
