I would like to retract myself regarding what I said about 8K… the fact I would never buy one. IF I can replace my dual 4K setup by one 8K ultra wide (7680x2160) I would do it… 😳 Interesting observation regarding the bandwidth..! They’re not implementing the full spec 2.1 DisplayPort ? Not that it will matter drastically.

I like that idea of 7680x2160 monitor, perhaps with 120Hz minimum refresh rate....oh, so secksay!;)

8K when I'm just about to consider buying a 4K monitor with my next PC upgrade. Thanks, but no thanks to 8K. And again AMD is ahead in such features, but honestly, with 8K monitor adaption numbers in absolute, it's a feature that does not seem to entice a lot of buyers in the first place. Typical ATI / AMD though.

It feels like AMD just added DisplayPort 2.1 as a feature checkpoint. It is quite unlikely that the bandwidth that DP 2.1 supports will be used by this generation of graphics cards, but it looks good on a slide. Hitting 8K 60 Hz (which is what DP 1.4 supports) will be challenging enough, never mind the 165 Hz that DP 2.1 will support. This level of performance and the required displays to support it, will most likely take another GPU generation (or two) to be feasible.

Cool. don't need to game in 8k, it's enough to use it in windows and media.

« 8k ultrawide » is just a fancy word for two 4k monitor smashed together. Pretty sure I am not the only one with dual 4k setup!

4K is still far from mainstream, it only began to gain traction in recent years... but hey at least they have DP2.0 to rub in nvidia's face.

I am liking that Ultrawide is getting more love. Need to upgrade from 21:9 1440p to 32:9 '8K' with miniLED. €4999 should suffice? 😀

Nothing wrong with being ahead of the game for future tech, but 4k is not even close to being fully utilized yet.

I think the biggest challenge for this is window managers. Unless you are using some tiling manager, it becomes quite unwieldy. I would argue that most 4k monitors are used for programming/text work, where they are head and shoulders above anything else.

Why? That's like getting a 4090 to play Minecraft, or a 16000DPI mouse to play solitaire. 4K makes a lot more sense for things like graphic designers, photo/video editors, stock investors, security, or really anything where you need to see fine details or a lot of details simultaneously. When it comes to text, it just has to be comfortably legible. That being said, as someone who almost daily does development, documentation, and system administration, I can tell you right now I have no need for 4K on a typical laptop or desktop monitor. In fact, I wouldn't want to go above 1080p because then I'm just going to have to upscale everything so I don't get lost in my work or strain my eyes. Not everything upscales properly, so 4K is just a more expensive, fiddly, and power-hungry method to do the exact same thing. Back when 1366x768 was still common in smaller displays, I was perfectly content with that resolution, and I'm sure I still would be today. Sure, the text would be a little pixelated, but that has no impact whatsoever on me getting the job done. You get used to it within a half hour.

AMD and Nvidia talking about 8K and there isn't a single display available I wanna upgrade to from my current 1080p. I want 2k up to 25'' sub 300€ on a true 8bit panel. Is that too much to ask for? Apparently, yes. Any decent display costs +500€ and is 32''. I don't need a TV, I want a monitor.

LOL I am hard pressed to move on from 1440p. I really like that in a 27" inch screen. I'm sure I will eventually go 4k but honestly the pixel density at 1440p 27" is pretty great.

I'm at 4k 27", but my nose is on the monitor literally.

I was the same until I got my 1080Ti then went to a 60hz 4k 32" screen, to be honest at first I wasn't sold but then flight simming and RTS made me realise it was the way forward. Now with a 6900xt I've got a 32" 4k 144hz variable rate HDR MSI monitor and its a revelation for everything. 4K ultra wide for flight sims (DCS) would be sweet but not much else for me.

I am not likely to upgrade from 1440p any time soon. So I don't really care for high refresh 4K, ultrawide 4K or actual 8K monitors. My plan is to get a 21:9 1440p oled monitor next. DP2.1 is nice for high refresh rates and higher colour depth though, so I absolutely appreciate that. Hopefully there will be oled offerings that can do 10/12-bit native colour depth at high refresh rates. That would be my preference.

In the slides they mention Display link up to 54 Gbps, NOT DisplayPort! 😉

Personally, 8K is the promised land of diminishing returns and wasteful product development. I really like that we are now getting to reasonable performance on native 4K. But there's still a lot of areas for improvement to bring that to the masses and not only the top tier of GPUs. This arbitrary goal of 8K isn't based on any realized improvement in perceived quality. It's marketing to make the numberbators excited and perpetuate the extreme pricing of top end GPUs.

nice, that 34" OLED should drop to 350$ after we have this totally worth it 8k stuff

The higher refresh rate 4K experience is probably what will make me bite. I never really saw the point unless you wanted a 42" screen etc. With cards being able to play 4k at higher refresh rates and now we are starting to get monitors its probably not far off I will make the move to 4k.
