So basically... Rebranded X470 without the restriction for GPU and M.2 on PCI-e 4.0. Very lame AMD, very lame.

It's actually less lame when you keep in mind Intel failed to do it at all. Apparently PCIe 4.0 is even harder than anyone expected. I still think AMD also failed partially because the X570 chipset is so stupid, but when an unlimited budget works behemoth like Intel fails completely, it does give the situation a more interesting perspective.

Too late for me (bought my B450 in august). Hopefully mine works with Ryzen 4000, I don't care about PCIe 4.0 as I've just switched to NVMe and when I need it for GPU I'll need another computer too.

^^AMD has stated that B450 will support Ryzen 4000. 😀

How is the X570 chipset stupid? It works wonderfully.

B450 has been confirmed to work for 4000 series but it will obviously depend per manufacturer and model if they bring out the bios update. I think most popular B450 boards like the MSI Mortar and Tomahawk for example will get decent support.

Why is the X570 stupid? It's one of the best chipsets out there lol.

I was wondering when the B550 motherboards are going to be released. I might get a b550 motherboard with my new rig that I am planning on building this summer. This is indeed good news to me. I hope the price is right.

It requires active cooling because it eats more electricity than a chipset should in 2019. Furthermore, something about the technical requirements forced the mobo makers to place it still in the usual place, physically, leaving the fan under the video card. It might be the maximum length of the PCB traces, I don't know. But since the chip is just a recycled CPU io die, after Asmedia failed to develop a real chipset, it kind of makes sense; it's an ad hoc solution of duct tape and bubble gum.

@wavetrex What else did you want from something that is better than x470 but not x570? which was the non lame solution? enlighten us all.

Any info whether the other pcie slots on B550 boards will be gen 3 or gen 2? The x470 chipset only had gen 3 lanes for the M.2 slots and gpu, everything else was running on gen 2, which was a bummer. At least the x570 boards brought every slot up to gen 4.

Its gen 4.0 from the CPU 4 lanes for M.2 and 16 lanes for GPU and Gen 3.0 from the Chipset, no more Gen 2.0 Its same config like last time, just each one upgraded one level further.

You know, if Nvidia next GPU wont have PCIe Gen 4.0 and Nvidia has the biggest market share, then this whole Gen 4.0 will be useless for most people for couple years longer. I have Zenith II, but not a single Gen 4.0 device, I wont be throwing out x2 2TB MP510 SSD's that basically brand new to pay double per Terabyte for zero performance gain except in synthetic benchmarks, Random read/write and 4K is still the same no matter if its Gen 3.0 or Gen 4.0. Im sure if TR3 was left on Gen 3.0 I would of paid much less for my board and the CPUs. AMD came out with Gen 4.0 way to early to milk early adopter money, even their own Gen 4.0 based video cards dont get any benefit from double the bandwidth, same benchmarks as on Gen 3.0, hell my 2080TI was used for a period on Gen 3.0 x8 [basically Gen 2.0 x16] and based on all benchmarks at worse case lost 5% So do we really need PCIe Gen 4.0? Or we just need MORE Pcie Lanes? My choice will be more Gen 3.0 PCIe lanes then fewer Gen 4 lanes. Right now the benefit of Gen 4.0 on Mainstream platform, is if you have AMD Gen 4.0 GPU, you can plug it in and still use the shared PCIe slot by splitting x8 gen 4.0 to each without losing any performance on the GPU side, it will be same bandwidth as on gen 3.0 x16

I'd prefer a new chipset like 670X and release a B650 @ the same time this time around.

Its a novel and clever solution, while not the optimal, it is definitely not stupid, it was designed that way, it is not duct-tape and bubble gum. It basically lets them only have to produce 2 different dies for a complete system, with all the fancy pants pcie 4.0 and io hub features, that is not trivial. The only bandaid it has is the fan , which wasnt intended.

WTF do people really want,no progress and new motherboard every CPU release .AMD listen up,you need to adopt an Intel way of doing things. For the record I am happy running AMD CPU on my X470 Motherboard. So If I choose I could run just about any Ryzen CPU released to date and even future releases of CPU's.

It's not a fail, it's just get hot sometime, in high stress, i have a X570 that get hot fast (as very very very compact and full everywhere), it took me 5min to mod it with a 9db fan now it is cooler AND silent, if board maker would use silent fan exept crap "gaming" fan you wouldn't notice that it have a fan. About the X570 exept more PCIe lane, i have nothing against this chipset, i am very happy about it. PCIe 4.0 will have one of the shortest life of this standard, the 5.0 is just behind the door (both AMD and intel are working on it), and we start hearing about the 6.0 for the future. Why on earth would intel work on the 4.0 as also the next socket might have a short existence, as Intel started late, it's better to directely work on next one.
data/avatar/default/avatar09.webp
I agree with @rl66 that PCIe 4.0 is short lived so there is no reason to hassle with it at least for Nvidia and Intel. It doesn't make any difference if next Nvidia GPUs support it or not. Only reason to buy X570 boards are the nice VRMs, otherwise almost anyone could use B350 chipset. The B550 boards are interesting, but not because of the chipset upgrade that much. I'm interested if we will finally get some decent mATX boards and even better ITX ones. Let's hope B550 is now the change for the better, and before any toxicity, AMD is not who decides what kind of boards will be released, the manufacturers are the ones who supervise the situation and decide if better quality is worth it. X570 boards already prove the major interest of manufacturers, but those are pretty much all moneygrabs! Seems like the situation won't get better than with Intel boards price wise.

If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid.

Besides PCI-E 4.0 there is no other reason to upgrade over any B450 motherboard, right?
