I wouldn't say it's exactly new, Ray tracing has been around for quite some time. You can find demos to try it out too.

Do we have a demo to compare Titan V v.s. VEGA on this new trick?
Is that even relevant? They are in so different ballparks. 1080 vs Vega would be more sensible. Oh, right, you must have meant professional applications. My bad. I would delete this post if the forum software had such an option...

Comparing AMD vs nV is not interesting. As there is always one more capable on particular workload. Interesting thing is That this was "Built on Vulkan". So we will see different implementation of same effects and different effect quality/impact capabilities.

At least the Nvidia news said it's for Volta GPU only...I mean the technology has been there but the exact support both companies mentioned should be new, right?
I think HW acceleration engine on Volta is new but there have been raytracing renderers for years. MentalRay/Iray/Arnold/Etc all raytraced. Nvidia's owns the first two and have shown demos before of them running close to real time on multiple GPUs or in actual real time on tesla clusters. This just seems like companies getting ready for it to actually be done in real time on a single GPU in the next few years and laying the groundwork ahead of time.

The iteration of their Raytracing is really nothing more a bridge to communicate with DXRT. Which DXRT requires DX12.

Vulkan is not built on idea of exclusivity for something... It goes with idea to include as much HW and SW as sensible..

Well, I can't say anything bad about both of the vendors chose to make this work by devs. Means we might actually see it applied more commonly in the future, if performance permits.

At first when i was watching this video i thought "wtf?! why are they mentioning FX cpus on brand new tech?", i took a look at comments and seen comment of people waiting for rx480 and once again "wtf?!". Then i took a look at date of a video, it is 2016. So amd has this tech since almost 2 years.
