If it's an option, stay away from surround and get stereo headphones, if you need a microphone, but one separately. Mostly gaming headsetswith microphone are not as good value for the money as phoper headphones. There is no "best" headset to recommend for everyone, it depends on what you like, how your head and ears are shaped, size of head and ears... So if it's an option, please go to shop and test those yourself. To recommend some stuff to test, Sennheiser HD650, Beyerdynamic DT880Pro, AKG K-702, Audio Technica AD-2000X & ATH-2000X.

^^ This. Gaming headsets are not very good and if budget is no limit as you say, I wouldn't even look twice at them. The Zalman clip-on mic is okay, but the Antlion is awesome (modmic.com).

Well, if you do not have a budget...then definitely go for a nice set of cans, that is where it is at. You can buy a clip on mic, as already has been said.

Would be good too know your budget before we start suggesting headsets but basically what Tat3 said. Avoid crappy gaming headsets.

Also add Audio Technica ATH AD700 to the list, but tbh, if you decide to buy one of these headphones we can talk about it then. The advantage of buying a good set of stereo headphones is simple. You're getting a better sounding, higher quality product. Better sounding, larger drivers, usually more comfortable. Then you let CMSS on your elite pro to worry about surround.

Yep, avoid gaming headsets. I unfortunately had more money than sense and bought a Razer 7.1 Tiamat. For gaming, fantastic sound especially FPS games. However for music and movies and basically anything else other than games. Holy crap they are down right awful. They provide a jack to plug in your stereo speakers giving the option to bypass straight to the speakers but the sound is still filtered badly. Microphone is average at best, and although the volume control is great allowing full customisation of the internal drivers in the headset... the volume control has no lighting so playing in the dark, you are clueless as to what volume you are adjusting. I have an Asus Xonar STX for music and movies and purchased Some Shure headphones. 100 times better quality (no exaggeration). If you want the full potential of your soundcard just avoid gaming headsets altogether.

OP that ZxR you got for yourself is very nice will work great with the 650's you got it should have a driver level surround option that works really good. Also don't forget the cans will need to break in.

I echo everyone else when I say those are good purchases and that you and your brother will be undoubtedly be pleased. As for the Antlion modmic, it can be difficult to nail them down, but typically you can put in an order and they will ship once they are ready. The effort and slightly high cost are well worth it, they work great and there's really no substitute for a quality boom mic, just as there's no substitute for quality headphones. They are a small outfit and have been running into supplier/manufacturer issues but they always work it out. Your patience will be well rewarded if you keep trying!

Whoa nice you hit the nail on the head with those choices. Although I would have gone for an external DAC but then again the ZxR and STX (especially the first) offer virtual surround features that you can use in games. The HD650s require a good amp to shine so I would be careful with my choice right there. The STX's amp is good but there is better. Same goes for ZxR. It's the same amp basically (but implemented better on the STX for 600 Ohms headphones). The best of both worlds is a cheap Creative soundcard to enable that surround feature then use "What U Hear" mode to pass on the audio signal to a superior external DAC.

wow, nice to see you went all out, you'll love that setup I'm pretty sure, never used the hd650, but had the hd595 a few years ago and loved them.
