that's actually quite smart, but obvious at the same time. nobody thought of the probability of smart home appliances being hacked until now?

lol... It sounds hilarious to connect refrigerator online, even if I have one online capable (10, 20 years from now I guess all refrigerators and other kitchen/house electronic stuff on market will be WiFi/online capable) I would never connect online devices like refrigerator, AC, oven...etc. It's just a matter of time when some smart ass would made some malware to hack all these devices and ask for ransom to unlock it. If I want to know what is in my refrigerator I would look in it before going from home and buy stuff in the way back from work, I don't want from refrigerator to make online order of stuff I eat without my knowledge. If I want from AC to be turned on in specific time so that my house would be cooled/warmed I would do that before going to work and program it with remote, most of us already is doing this for years... But on the other way if manufacturers of all these devices demands that all these electronic stuff must be conented online "to work propperly" then I'm going to start panicking and prepare myself for the end of the world.

Probably because firmware up till now just had to simply make the device work without requiring updates, and especially (now) security updates. Hell, the experience of troubleshooting most devices with firmware (upgraded/downgraded) and then combined with their generally short update lifespan of a few years, oh boy.

But, but cloud technology and and everything synchronized with each other, with the Facebook and the Google+. And you can share how many cans you've opened with your electronic can opener which then shares the market data to the companies so they can serve you ads based on what you eat.

😀 But right now I know at least 5 people who will use these features for sure when Facebook and Google+ capable smart home appliances hit the market. But me, no way jose... Just imagine problems new generations of geeks would have: "...god dammit, it's Christmas time and my old granny is having a problem with her smart oven, evil neighbour's son from floor upstairs probably has hacked hew oven again via WiFi and locked it with password, now she can't connect that oven online to try some new cookie recipe and like so many times before again I must go to reset that oven to default, setup firewall and DNS servers..." Welcome to the new age of technology my son.... lol

Brilliant stuff! Can just imagine the line taken by an enterprising brief in a client's defence: "M'Lud, my client only bought that television set last week because he fancied having an HDMI display, and wasn't aware that it could be used to surf the internet. There is no mention at all in the handbook supplied that this model can be used for all sorts of nefarious purposes, such as sending malicious emails." Isn't technology really wonderful? Love stories like this. Keep them coming. :flip2:

It reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend regarding "smart, connected" appliances, some 15 years ago now... The more annoying situation will inevitably be when you find you can't flush the toilet unless you have the oven set to exactly 75 degrees.

We've yet to fire the Gaben Laser Beamâ„¢; Xbox Live is being targeted with our botnet of refrigerators.

The hell with the refrigerators and toasters, those passive agressive electronics. I have no trust in them.

Yeah, just wait, it'll be July and some script kiddie finds it hilarious to turn on everyone's heating to max at 2 am. Real funny.

The mind boggles at something like that happening, waxbytes. Careful what you wish for, it might just happen. :cyclone:
