I recently added a 3TB purple to my main rig. Looked at reviews, etc, and it seemed like the purple drives are just about the best reliability wise that you can get for the money.

Hey hilbert u think u could do a direct comparison of all the WD drives like the red, blues and so on ide like to see how they all compare in terms of speed and capacity versus price.

I dont think that all of them are meant for the same purpose. For example greens are meant for servers with intention of running 24/7 with lower power usage.

Im a big fan of the WD Re Durability and the Se scalability HDDs. iv used 12 of the WD Re, without single one failing on me. And performance is top notch too!

Reds would be better suited for that. I use 4 of them in my NAS.

When I was deciding on what 2nd drive that I wanted to get I was torn between red and purple but decided on red because I knew the red drives had reliability and durability because of them being NAS drives and they had alot of reviews on them while the purple drives I knew they were meant for surveillance and 24/7 but they didn't have may reviews. It is nice to see 6tb drives for the surveillance users.

Here you go; http://www.wdc.com/en/products/internal/desktop/ The black ones are the most reliable you can get from WD. The read and write speeds are relly goods, plus the 5 years waranty.

To me the http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1050 Are much more reliable and durable than the Red drives. but cost little more.

When I look for NAS hdd I choose from ones, having 5 year warranty. Simple rule, but data security is the priority. So for NAS: RE, SE and one model of RED would be on the list.

HGST ultrastar drives are actually the most reliable. They had the lowest fail rate when google did that study.

5year warranty is not guarantee you 5year of free fail and in failure case, hdd is only replaced and u might get refurb drive too (afaik wd didnt give data recover on their warranty) if me, i prefer getting cheaper drive series, ie. RED with extra drive for backup rather than getting RE/SE, which is enterprise drive that cost close 2x of their consumer series (well in my place WD enterprise drive is not easy to find and price is almost double) even 4x green (2 online-2 backup) is somewhat safer than 2x RE only but thats me 🙂 as far difference, i think mostly on firware, minor different in mechanics parts i also curious with purple in normal/daily usage is it good enough ?
