Samsung starts selling 75-inch ES9000 smart TV

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Samsung is now selling a 75" ES9000 series smart TV in South Korea for 19.8 million won, the equivalent of about $17,450!

In short, if you loved the LED-backlit display of the 55-inch model, you're going to adore the ES9000, which features the same smart TV brains alongside a retractable webcam unit housed on the top edge. The picture was pleasingly rich and sharp -- presumably due to the aforementioned backlighting and the ES series' edge-to-edge design. The bezel is a mere 7.9mm and Samsung has decided to coat the frame in a gentle Rose Gold coating which, due to the TV's slightly shady location, was a little trickier to pick out.

Panasonic: No cheap OLED TVs anytime soon

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Panasonic president Kazuhiro Tsuga told the press that cheap OLED TVs aren't likely to hit the market for a "considerable time".
The take home message? Don't expect to hang up a brand new $300 OLED TV on your wall by the end of 2013.

The strategic Sony-Panasonic partnership is the result of pressure being applied by Korean-based electronics manufacturers, LG and Samsung. This year, both companies unveiled their own large-screen OLED televisions. Working together, Sony and Panasonic hope to minimize the effects of their head start.

Interestingly, Sony pioneered OLED technology. The company actually sold OLED televisions during 2007 and 2008, but halted production after both consumers and industry were spooked by financial uncertainty. Sony's 1080p, 27-inch OLED units sold for around $2000.

Antec HDTV Bias Lighting Kit - hands on

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

A quick hands on with this one, Antec released HDTV Bias Lighting Kit last week.

You know when you have that new huge 55" LED TV and in the evening when it gets dark you can see a little LED wash / clouding on the black screen. It is a common problem these days.

Some people are very bothered by it, other not at all. It is a problem that can be fixed to a large extent by placing or pointing a light behind the screen. The visuals will change dramatically as your eyes will compensate that black level and contrast. This actually is the reason why Philips has released Ambi-light TVs initially.

Antec has a very simple solution at hand for roughly 30 USD/EUR, they took some of the brightest LEDs they could find, connect it towards the USB port of your television and when you power on, you have light. An adhesive coating on the LED strip will make it stick towards the back of the television. The LEDs will power up and down with activation of the HDTV, but should you wish to deactivate the  LEDs, you can simply turn it off with an convenient on/off switch.

Unit Dimensions:

  • Cable: 51.1

Microsoft demonstrates Windows Phone 7.8 start screen

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Microsoft shows off the Windows Phone 7.8 start screen in the video clip below. This is the only thing that Windows Phone 7.5 owners have to look forward to, since they won't be getting an upgrade to Windows Phone 8.

Ben Rudolph shows off an early build of Windows Phone 7.8 running on a Nokia Lumia 900. The new start screen includes resizable tiles, bringing a whole new level of customization to your smartphone experience.

The announcement of Microsoft's Surface tablet was followed by rumors that the software giant may also be working on its own Windows Phone 8 handset, but this rumor got officially denied by a Microsoft executive:
A Microsoft executive said the company has no plans to manufacture its own company-branded smartphones, denying reports to the contrary that emerged after Redmond last week roiled the PC hardware industry by unveiling its own tablet computer.

Asked in an interview if Microsoft planned to apply that strategy to the smartphone market, Greg Sullivan, senior marketing manager for Windows Phone, said, "No, we do not."

Microsoft has revealed that hardware makers building Windows Phone 8 devices include HTC, Nokia, Samsung, and Huawei. "We have a strong ecosystem of partners that we are very satisfied with," Sullivan said Friday. Source: Information Week

EIZO FORIS FS2333 Gaming PC Monitor

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Eizo Nanao Corporation today introduced the FORIS FS2333, a 23-inch full high-definition (1920 x 1080 native resolution) home entertainment monitor. The FORIS FS2333 is designed for gaming as well as other leisure activities such as watching movies and editing photos. It features all-new tone mapping technology called "Smart Insight" with five settings for RTS (real time strategy) and FPS (first person shooter) games that EIZO co-developed with Fnatic, one of the world's leading professional esports teams.

Smart Insight automatically identifies dark areas of an image and improves visibility. Important details in the shadows such as the location of an opponent become easier to spot so gamers can react more quickly. Because Smart Insight uses tone mapping, it improves visibility in dark areas while preserving image details without reducing contrast. This is a significant improvement over conventional gaming monitors which attempt to achieve improvements in visibility by applying gamma correction uniformly across the image resulting in blur and low contrast in dark areas.

The FORIS FS2333 comes with two other "Smart" technologies called Smart Resolution and Smart Detection. Smart Resolution is EIZO's own super-resolution technology that analyzes an image for noise and blurring and then corrects the blur without accentuating the noise. This feature is "Smart" because it adjusts only those areas where it is needed. It even distinguishes skin tones and text from other content and optimizes how they are displayed. Smart Detection identifies where on the screen a video or game is being played and applies super-resolution processing to sharpen the image while leaving other areas untouched.

The FORIS FS2333 uses an IPS panel and a mercury-free LED backlight. The IPS panel offers vivid display of color and wide 178

ViewSonic VP3280-LED 31.5-Inch 4K Resolution Display

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Hmm, yummie ... ViewSonic has a very intersting display 'on display' :) Its a 31.5-inch LED backlit display with an amazing 4K resolution (3840 x 2160).

That's 8.8 million pixels with a pixel density of 150 PPI which translates into amazingly crisp display. To realte that a 1080P three way monitor setup in eyefinity is just over 6 Mpixels.

It doesn't stop there though, the monitor is capable of displaying 10-bit 1.07 billion-colors and that should be rather apopealing to photographers and video editors. The VP3280-LED is however a prototype and but could/should hit retail late this year.

ViewSonic is running this monitor from an Intel Core i5 powered PC and according to them this PC is only capable of pushing still picture from this display. It requires two dual-link DVI cables for operation. ViewSonic VP3280-LED is expected might cost thousands of dollars though.
