Slowdown in PC RAM Price Declines

The recent report highlights a deceleration in the fall of PC DRAM prices. The current quarter's projection indicates a slowdown in DRAM price decline to a range between 0% to 5%.

This marks a distinct difference from the earlier quarters of 2023, which noted substantial price drops between 13% to 18%. The report clarifies that these statistics pertain to the entire DRAM market, which includes server, mobile, and graphics sectors, in addition to the specific PC DRAM segment.

TrendForce points out a contributing factor to the slowing price decline is the strategic reduction in production by the three main DRAM manufacturers. However, such a strategy of deliberately creating scarcity by limiting production is not a long-term solution in a competitive environment. It would rather be in the manufacturers' favor to drive demand by making high-capacity RAM configurations more economically accessible.

Additionally, the report indicates high DRAM inventory levels, which pose another challenge for producers. Holding excessive inventories is not a sustainable long-term plan, as any ease in production or inventory pressure from a major player could trigger a more drastic price fall. While awaiting potential catalysts, such as new devices or platforms that could boost DRAM demand, producers are likely to continue maintaining their inventories.

Given the Q2 and Q3 data and the analysis, TrendForce anticipates no recovery in DRAM prices before 2024.
