Recently, listings for 48GB and 24GB DDR5 SODIMM modules have been discovered on a popular Chinese online marketplace. SK hynix, a prominent memory manufacturer, is behind these laptop memory modules, which are now available on Taobao.

The larger 48GB SODIMM option will be appealing to users aiming to maximize the RAM on laptops and mini-PCs that support non-binary SODIMMs. For instance, a device that previously supported a maximum of 64GB with both slots occupied could now reach an impressive 96GB of onboard DDR5 memory. However, it's crucial to verify explicit support for non-binary memory modules in your device or seek testimonials from tech forums before making a purchase, as some laptops can be selective about memory compatibility. Based on the product sticker visible on the Chinese-sourced 48GB DDR5 SODIMMs, these specific modules are rated at DDR5-5600 speeds. The 24GB modules are reported to have similar ratings according to the ITHome source article.

It's important to note that the Chinese pricing for the 48GB and 24GB SODIMMs may not directly correlate to eventual prices in the United States, as multiple variables come into play. Meanwhile, we will continue to monitor availability, pricing, and BIOS updates from laptop manufacturers that introduce support for non-binary memory. The pricing for the 48GB and 24GB modules is set at 1,180 and 600 Chinese Yuan respectively, approximately equivalent to $165 and $84. It's important to note that the standard VAT rate for Chinese retail goods is 13%.
