Sanwa started selling the LAN cable tester LAN-256003PRO. A LAN cable tester can check the connection and shield status, presented on a small display.
Compatible cables include LAN cable, telephone cable, and CATV coaxial cable, and you can check the condition of the connection, short, open, miswire, reverse wiring, split pair, shield status, cable length, etc. In addition, as the main unit and remote unit (4 units total) can be removed, it is suitable for cable wiring work inspection. Compatible connectors are RJ-45 / RJ-11 / RJ-12 / COAX, etc. The resolution of the liquid crystal display is 128 x 64 dots (matrix LCD / 56 x 37.5 mm), the power source is four AAA batteries, and the maximum cable length that can be measured is 300 meters.

it depends where you live and what you do.
i live in Palo Alto (Silicon Valley). this is a D.I.Y. option instead of hiring an electrician which would end up costing more the larger the LAN is.
at this time in this place this is a very cost effective item. it's not much different than a builder buying a proper drill. there are literally hundreds of thousands of rental properties with LAN just in Santa Clara county and a lot of that has been DIY'ed over time by different people.

Just buy a new Cat5 cable (all you need) and run it through the house, no need to spend 400 bucks on a tester.
