Recent information from Twitter user @momomo_us reveals detailed specifications of a new High Power Card Edge (HPCE) power connection standard designed for efficient GPU power supply via the motherboard.

The technical documentation outlines the features of this connector, which has a power delivery capacity of over 600W, exceeding the capabilities of the 12VHPWR connector. The HPCE connector operates similarly to a PCI Express connector. It has four sets of pins, with 16 allocated for power distribution and 12 for communication between the motherboard and the graphics card. The dimensions of this connector are consistent with a standard PCIe x1 connector.

Located next to the primary PCIe x16 slot on a motherboard, the HPCE connector is positioned behind the x16 slot, typically where the motherboard chipset heatsink lies. This arrangement ensures a straightforward fit of the graphics card into both x16 and HPCE connectors, simplifying installation. The design of the HPCE connector negates the need for additional locking mechanisms since the x16 slot's existing lock securely holds the graphics card. Regarding power capabilities, while the documentation does not specify a maximum power limit, it notes the capability to provide over 600W, anticipating the needs of upcoming graphics cards. As a reference, some RTX 4090 graphics cards, especially those designed for LN2 overclocking, can exceed the 600W threshold, indicating the need for such high-capacity connectors.

Introduced at Computex, this connector was observed in various prototype motherboards and graphics cards. Its implementation aims to improve cable management by supplying power to the graphics card directly through the motherboard, promoting a cleaner look without extraneous power cables.

Interestingly, the design isn't entirely new. It is a refined version of the existing HPCE standard prevalent in the server domain. This modification enhances the aesthetic and cable management of graphics cards by supplying power directly from the motherboard. Given the HPCE connector's proven reliability in servers, this new design promises dependability. However, its widespread use in consumer devices hinges on industry acceptance. Currently, Asus seems to be the primary information source, suggesting possible limited application to their specific products.
