Asus launches its ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha motherboard, specifically for Threadripper 3990X

Asus launches its ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha motherboard, specifically for Threadripper 3990X

Albeit all X399 motherboards are compatible, ASUS deems in necessary to update the Zenith II serries towards an Alpha model with an even stronger VRM design.

Although it continues to maintain 16 phases of power, this Alpha version uses the Power-Stage Infineon TDA21490 instead of the TDA21472 used in the original model. This allows the maximum current per phase to be raised to 90A, compared to the original 70A. Threadripper 3990X likely is used with lots of memory, think 128 GB and 256 GB and that does require proper power stages for the higher frequencies.

Otherwise the motherboard is identical to the original model. It still supports 8 ram modules in Quad-Channel with frequencies up to 4733MHz, 4 PCI-E 4.0 x16 slots, 10Gb/s Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, maintains its OLED display. The audio adopts "ROG SupremeFX" of S1220 + ESS9018Q2C. At this time, no sales announcement has been issued for this product in the domestic market. The original model costs $850.

I guess in due time we will find out if it is truly worth it for something like this. I'm happy with my Aorus Xtreme TRX40, but need one of them CPU's to drop in it. Hopefully when the 3990X does drop, so will the price of what's out now...

I'll happily pay a grand for a 24 core 48 threaded beast!!!

With the current Zenith II Extreme board being pretty much top of the pile, I wonder how many owners are a bit concerned that a CPU - known to be getting released for some time - might be so problematic with their board that Asus deemed it necessary to release another version dedicated to the 3990X. Will Gigabyte follow suit with an 'Alpha' version of their
Aorus Xtreme? It kinda puts a question mark over an upgrade slot-in pathway. Just seems a little odd.

I have a great boss. Yesterday he came over with his laptop and said, "We're getting a new dev box. What do you think of this?" He showed me set of parts for a machine that had a TR 3970X as the CPU. I stated I think that is overkill and he said, "Yes, it is but I want to get one here to try it out." I am so fortunate. :)

x399 isn't compatible with Threadripper 3xxx though........

This is a TRX40 motherboard is it not?
