It's not often that one can fall in love with a mainboard on first sight. Well, Gigabyte just manage to do just that for me. See, you receive this box and the minute you have that package in your hand you notice how heavy it is. Then that magical moment, you open up that box ... pop that box you might say, freakish mamma, after removing gadget after gadget you finally get a first glimpse at 'her' .. nice, shiny and colorful to the bone. Love at first sight .. you know straight from the beginning it's her .. This has to be one hell of a mainboard as the people who designed paid so much attention to it that without even connecting it you can almost state .. that's one helluva mainboard while scratching the back of you head.

Gigabyte dear friends makes mainboards for Intel and AMD based platforms and have been doing just that for quite a while now with a lot of success. They are now one of the major Taiwan electronics manufactures that produce all kinds of hardware from Taiwan to America to Europe. No matter where you look, you'll probably be able to buy a Gigabyte product these days.

This time dear friends we are going to take a look at the ATX form factor based Gigabyte 8PE667 Ultra 2, an Intel 845PE chipset based mainboard for the Pentium 4 platform with more functions than a Swiss-knife.

Maniboard FeaturesThe GA-8PE667 Ultra 2 motherboard has been designed for gamers who like a high performance feature-rich enthusiast PC, so this is the category high-end and mid range we are talking about. I include the mid-range segment here because of the many integrated features on this mainboard like the excellent six channel sound. Intgrations like that make the total price of your drop as you probably won't buy a full-fetched soundcard. The mainboard is managed by by the Intel 845PE chipset which can support the new Pentium4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology (review here) and includes DIMM's of PC2100-PC2700 (DDR200/266/333) SDRAM via its three on-board 184 pin (2.5v) DIMM slots thus DDR 333 memory (review here) makes the system a well performing one for current and future intensive application. Intel's new i845PE chipset supports a 400/533MHz adjustable FSB and can utilize the entire Socket 478 CPU line from Intel including the latest P4 3.06GHz with HT technology and the entry level Celeron's. GA-8PE667 Ultra 2 delivers great features for gaming and media enthusiasts, most important integrated functions however are Silicon Image Serial ATA, Intel 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller, RAID + ATA133 function, USB 2.0, DualBIOS, unique EZ-Fix AGP 4X and memory DIMM slot with Anti-Burn design and lots more. Let's quickly discuss these features one by one.
