Hyte Y40 chassis review

This time, we’re checking out the Hyte Y40, a mainly aesthetic-oriented mid-sized ATX tower PC chassis. It’s not the first product from this American (precisely – California) company. They debuted with an ITX case called Revolt 3, which gained good opinions around the websites (and we got a chance to cover on October 22), and a chassis called Y60, which we checked in mid-2022 – both of them earned the “Recommended” award. A wireless headset, eclipse HG10, and some mouse pads are also available. Additionally, they’re planning to release a keyboard, but that’s still to come. Ok, let’s get back to the Hyte Y40, which seems to be a smaller version of the Y60. Will that be the case here? (pun intended)                         ``

It’s a (rather extensive) mid-tower chassis with around 50 l of volume (whereas Y60 had… 60). The looks are attractive; it resembles quite a bit the Lian Li O11 Dynamic (more than the bigger/older brother). We’ll find the two 120 mm (max 1300 rpm) fans, one at the bottom and the third at the back (Y60 had two at the bottom). This time the tempered glass contains not three but two pieces. There are three colour versions:

• Black/Black
• White/Black
• Red/Black (the one reviewed)

The exact dimensions are 439 × 240 × 472 (L×W×H) in total; it’s 49.72 l of volume, so that’s in the mid-range of the mid-tower chassis. You get PCI Express 4.0 riser, which is great because it’s not a standard bundle in the competition offers (but Y60 had it too). The Y40 supports up to ATX (and uATX and mini-ITX) motherboards – this time, there’s no E-ATX compatibility (but that shouldn’t be an issue). According to the specs, one 3.5” or two 2.5” drives are supported. On the front, you will find the following ports:

• USB 3.0 x 2,
• USB 3.2 Type-C x 1
• Audio/Mic Jack
• Power button

The Hyte Y40 provides many cooling options, supporting radiators

• up to 280 mm (up to 120 mm thick) at the side,
• 360 mm at the top (up to 28 mm wide),
• and 120 mm at the back.

It’s possible to mount

• up to two 120 or two 140 mm fans at the side,
• three 120 mm at the top,
• one 120 mm at the rear (and the 1300 rpm is pre-installed),
• one 120 or 140 mm fan at the bottom (and one 120 mm 1300 rpm is pre-installed)

You also get four (which is more than in Y60, where it was three) + six (half-height) expansion slots.

When using an air cooler rather than a liquid cooler, HYTE recommends the installation of 2 additional intake fans (not included) on the side mount of the Y40 for optimal airflow. There are also three fan filters (two at the bottom, then the side, and the top). You can use CPU air coolers with a max height of not 160 mm, but 180 mm (which should fit practically all models). The GPUs can measure up to 422 mm in length (375 mm in Y60) and not 75, but 94 mm thick (60mm or less was recommended for best cooling in Y60, now it maxes 80 mm in Y40). The PSU shouldn’t be longer than 224mm, but it was 235 mm (and that’s still a lot). The price is now 149.99, which is cheaper than the Y60’s - 199.99 USD. Will it be worth that price?
