ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E Gaming review -
Product Showcase
When we place the motherboard at an angle we see that all new socket LGA2066. It will support both Kaby and Skylake-X processors, this is referred to as the Core X series processors. The cooler mounting system is the same as on X99, meaning you can reuse your cooler and are not forced to purchase a new socket mounting system or complete cooling kit.
Storage ports then -- ASUS is fitting the board with 8x SATA3 ports. There is no U2 / SATA Express connector, real-estate that nobody is going using either really. So we're cool with that.
Here we see that a bit better. A good eight SATA3 6Gbps ports, alongside two M.2 slots that have been tucked away close to the left of the ATX connector with one M2 hidden under the chipset heatsink.
There are two M.2 SSD slots available, one 8cm type 2242/2260/2280 and another 10cm type 2260/2280/22110 slot. Both support PCIe x4/x2 Gen 3.0. With two NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 connectors onboard, delivering up to 32 Gb/s data transfer speed per connector, the dual M.2 supports RAID modes. The most right slot is hidden under the chipset heatsink and gets extra cooling this way.
Close to the left of the ATX power connector there is a second M2 slot, which unfortunately needs to be vertically mounted. Ad extra mounting bracket kit is included so it doesn't hang their as vulnerable as it really is.
The memory DIMM slots, the board supports single, dual and quad channel with support for up-to DDR4 4133 (O.C.) and starts at 2133 MHz memory modules. 8 x DDR4 DIMM sockets can support up-to 128 GB of system memory with Skylake-X processors.
Today we’re putting the new Asus ROG THOR 1000W PLATINUM II power supply on our test bench. The company is not so much known from their PSUs (as they’re rather associated with the motherboards, graphic cards, monitors, or peripherals). Still, we had a chance to check the first Thor at the end of 2018, when the 1200W version was reviewed (priced 329 EUR/USD), earning the “Best Hardware” award. Will the new version be as successful?
