AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 Processor - Page 1

Tweet AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 Processor
2.8GHz, 1MB, 2000MHz FSB, Socket 939 - SKU: ADAFX57BNBOX
Price Range: $1,011.00 - $1,289.30

AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 Processor reviewProviding high-end PC performance on 3D games and intense applications, the AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 processor allows power-hungry users to experience the next generation of single-threaded games with intense and realistic graphics resolution.

Recently AMD launched its fastest single core processor to date. Based on the little by little becoming trendy Socket 939 design, it runs at no less than 2.8 GHz, has 1 Megabyte Level 2 cache memory and is bitching fast... can you guess already what we are talking about? That's right, the AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 and today Guru3D.com is presenting you the review as always from a gamers point of view.

Today's processor being tested is based on the latest 90nm processor fabrication process from AMD, it was released roughly a month or two ago and still rather difficult to find/buy. Not only is availability a concern, also its price as at this very moment is a massive factor. You still need to chip in and do not choke now, roughly 1000 US Dollars / 900 Euros for this high-end processor.

What is it that is giving this chip its edge? Well a blazingly fast architecture, a rapid processor frequency clock of 2800 MHz and of course that 1MB of Level 2 Cache.

Technical Specifications:

Clock: 2.8GHz
L1: 124KB
L2: 1MB
Multiplier: 14x
Package: 939-pin
organic mPGA
Core: 90 nm SOI
Transistors: 105.9M
Die Size: 193mm2
Vcore: 1.5V
Thermal Power: 89W

The great thing about the processor is of course that it's already compatible with 64-bit platforms, sorry if you don't want to hear this but in a year or two we'll probably all run in a 64-bit environment as it is the next logical step. Which is a welcome feature if you are one of the few out there running on Windows XP 64-bit Edition now already. Of course, for the rest of us the chip will run in its legacy 32-bit x86 mode without any issues at all. Optimal 32- and 64-bit compatibility without performance loss, that's the key factor here.

With an unlocked multiplier and a lot of violent behavior under that heatspreader, this is a beast of a processor. We'll take it for a little test spin and of course we'll mainly look at it from a gamers point of view. Let's fire up this review shall we?
