Antec HDTV Bias Lighting Kit - hands on

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

A quick hands on with this one, Antec released HDTV Bias Lighting Kit last week.

You know when you have that new huge 55" LED TV and in the evening when it gets dark you can see a little LED wash / clouding on the black screen. It is a common problem these days.

Some people are very bothered by it, other not at all. It is a problem that can be fixed to a large extent by placing or pointing a light behind the screen. The visuals will change dramatically as your eyes will compensate that black level and contrast. This actually is the reason why Philips has released Ambi-light TVs initially.

Antec has a very simple solution at hand for roughly 30 USD/EUR, they took some of the brightest LEDs they could find, connect it towards the USB port of your television and when you power on, you have light. An adhesive coating on the LED strip will make it stick towards the back of the television. The LEDs will power up and down with activation of the HDTV, but should you wish to deactivate the  LEDs, you can simply turn it off with an convenient on/off switch.

Unit Dimensions:

  • Cable: 51.1

Microsoft demonstrates Windows Phone 7.8 start screen

Display 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Microsoft shows off the Windows Phone 7.8 start screen in the video clip below. This is the only thing that Windows Phone 7.5 owners have to look forward to, since they won't be getting an upgrade to Windows Phone 8.

Ben Rudolph shows off an early build of Windows Phone 7.8 running on a Nokia Lumia 900. The new start screen includes resizable tiles, bringing a whole new level of customization to your smartphone experience.

The announcement of Microsoft's Surface tablet was followed by rumors that the software giant may also be working on its own Windows Phone 8 handset, but this rumor got officially denied by a Microsoft executive:
A Microsoft executive said the company has no plans to manufacture its own company-branded smartphones, denying reports to the contrary that emerged after Redmond last week roiled the PC hardware industry by unveiling its own tablet computer.

Asked in an interview if Microsoft planned to apply that strategy to the smartphone market, Greg Sullivan, senior marketing manager for Windows Phone, said, "No, we do not."

Microsoft has revealed that hardware makers building Windows Phone 8 devices include HTC, Nokia, Samsung, and Huawei. "We have a strong ecosystem of partners that we are very satisfied with," Sullivan said Friday. Source: Information Week

Google fellow Jeff Dean explains the simulation basically invented the concept of a cat. Full details at Wired.

ASUS ROG ARES 2 to feature two Radeon HD 7870 GPUs

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

That's right, Radeon 7870 GPUs as TPU reports today:

ASUS is said to be prepping the ARES 2, a dual Radeon HD 7870 graphics card:
ASUS ARES 2 will back two 28 nm "Pitcairn" GPUs with all components unlocked; likely factory-overclocked speeds beyond those of the HD 7870 GHz Edition; and a total of 4 GB of GDDR5 memory (2 GB per GPU system).

The card will draw power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors, and will have a TDP of around 300W. It will take advantage of AMD ZeroCore CrossFire, with which it powers down the second GPU when not gaming, or with light 3D loads that the first GPU can munch on. With the monitor idling for a set amount of time, both GPUs power down. It's likely that ASUS will use a triple-slot cooling solution, despite the fact that the HD 7870 is a generally cool GPU.

Sandia CPU cooler 30x better heat transfer

Review 567 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

That's a big claim, Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, introduces a proof-of-concept cooler that promises almost 30 times higher heat transfer efficiency than traditional tower heatsinks. The Sandia cooler uses a different approach to cooling, the cooler doesn't directly touch the thing it is intended to cool but spins above it at a mere 1/1000th of an inch on an "air bearing".

The cooler promises very quiet operation and according to Sandia it can be manufactured at a cost of less than $10. A LED cooling firm has already signed a license and Sandia is in talks with four chip cooling companies to discuss business partnerships.
The cooler unit spinning at 2,000RPM above your expensive CPU may sound a little hazardous but the company say that very tight manufacturing tolerances aren

Far Cry 3 delayed three months

Games 1603 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 3 will be released on November 29 in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and on December 4 in the U.S. Far Cry 3 will be available for X360, PS3 and PC. As usual, the reason of this delay is that Ubisoft needs more time to further polish it.

In Far Cry 3, players step into the shoes of Jason Brody, a man alone at the edge of the world, stranded on a mysterious tropical island. In this savage paradise where lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing, players dictate how the story unfolds, from the battles they choose to fight to the allies or enemies they make along the way. As Jason Brody, players will slash, sneak, detonate and shoot their way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of right and wrong.

"We're taking more time to create the best possible gameplay experience," said Dan Hay, producer at Ubisoft. "Far Cry 3 is a huge offering and we want every element of this insane, action-packed adventure to be of the highest possible quality for the players."

Zotac GeForce GTX 670 Extreme Edition

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Details and photos of Zotac's GeForce GTX 670 Extreme Edition over at Asian tech site Expreview. This new overclocker-friendly model will only be available in Asia though accordin to TPU:

The card ships with out of the box clock speeds of 1111 MHz (GPU base), 1202 MHz (GPU Boost), and 1652 MHz (memory actual), or 6.60 GHz (memory effective). It draws power from 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe power connectors, and conditions power using a 13-phase VRM that consists of noise-free chokes and PowIRstage DrMOS chips by International Rectifier. Power is further conditioned by a trio of multi-phase FPCAPs, and tantalum capacitors. Like the GTX 680 Extreme Edition, the card features the entire overclocker-friendly feature-set, including OC+ Module, dual-BIOS with LN2-friendly BIOS, voltage measurement points, temperature and phase loading LEDs.

Cooling the beast is the same swanky cooling solution as the one found on the GTX 680 Extreme Edition. Staying within the confines of 2 expansion slots, the cooler packs a large aluminum fin heatsink that spans the entire length of the card, which uses five 8 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes that draw heat from the copper GPU base, to the aluminum fin stack. The heatsink is then ventilated by a pair of 92 mm fans.
