Intel prepares 720, 710 and 520 SSD series

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Engadget got its hands on details of Intel's SSD plans.. They managed to obtain this leaked roadmap listing the potential additions, and we're afraid to ask how much the new kings of the hill might cost -- the "Ramsdale" SSD 720 Series uses up to 400GB of SLC NAND in a PCI Express card form factor, and the "Lyndonville" SSD 710 series with a similar quantity of enterprise-grade MLC flash. There's also a direct successor to the current top-of-the-line in the "Cherryville" SSD 520 Series, which will stretch all the way up to 480GB and down to 64GB in Q4 of this year, as well as Paint Creek, which seems destined for boot drives with only 80GB and 40GB capacities to choose from.

Intel not working on hardware-based antivirus

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Weird, despite earlier claims McAfee CEO David DeWalt denied his company is embedding antivirus technology:

When Intel Corp. acquired antivirus software company McAfee many believed that the world's largest maker of chips will embed certain exclusive security algorithms directly into its chips, something that will boost competitive qualities of Intel's processors and reduce other software and semiconductor companies' abilities to compete. Even though McAfee does not deny that there will be unique security technologies, there will be no hardware-based antiviral programs.

"We are not embedding anything into the silicon. What we are doing is utilizing features that exist today with the technologies McAfee has to secure the stack in a way that has never been done before. [...] What people do not realize is Intel has already innovated security capabilities into the hardware. That

Google has been releasing new versions of Chrome almost every six weeks since last summer and have listed over 3.700 changes made with this latest stable release.

Some of the Chrome 11 changes include bug fixes in cloud printing, new hardware accelerated 3D CSS, updated security of its built-in version of Adobe Flash, and user agent string changes that bring it in line with the changes made in Firefox 4. The browser update also addressed 25 security vulnerabilities, 15 of which were ranked as high.

However, the feature that Google highlighted was a new speech input function implemented with HTML 5. The new feature works seamlessly with Google Translate to provide speech-to-text capabilities. Newly embedded on the translate page is a microphone icon, which you can click to speak your input that converts into text. It appears to only work with English at this time. Intel Ivy Bridge chipsets will have USB 3.0 and PCIe 3.0

Mainboard 578 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Detals about Intel's 7-series chipsets were leaked. The next generation of LGA1155 processors will feature PCI-Express 3.0 bus to connect with graphics cards. PCI-Express 3.0 doubles bandwidth over PCI-Express 2.0, and comes with a number of new features

It is believed that next year in Q1 we all will see Intel release its first 22nm processors (codename Ivy Bridge) which will be compatible (BIOS update is required) with current 6 Series LGA1155 motherboards but will also work with the upcoming 7 Series line-up (X79 excluded).

Now, we may only be in April but Intel has already compiled for its partners some slides detailing the features of the 7 Series chips and those slides have found their way online. As seen below, Intel plans to introduce three chips (Z77, Z75 and H77) for consumer systems and three (Q77, Q75 and B77) for business PCs, but we'll focus on the former category as that's what you'll see on most retail boards.

Go check the thumbnail with the slides, some pretty interesting info is in there alright.
