New CPU frequency world record - 8199MHz!

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Over at the Extreme Systems forums a user called TiN EOF posted the results of his all new world record processor overclocking. Listen to this, the guys achieved a blistering 8199 MHZ (!) on a Celeron D 347 processor.

Here's the kit he used:

  • D347 lapped, then IHS-removed and polished
  • Xtremelabs.org MAGNUM Legend Edition copper pot
  • DFI Lanparty UT P35-T2R
  • Some fast evil Nidec fans
  • OCZ 1GB DRAM
  • Radeon 7000 VE PCI
  • ENERMAX Revolution85+ 1250W

The Cedar Mill architecture based processor is normally clocked at 3.06GHz. To get it towards 8GHz he needed more than just cooling, as he removed the heat spreader from the processor.

AT 2.096V, liquid Nitrogen cooling and the heat spreader removed he reached 8199.5MHz.

Check out the thumbnails.

Icy Dock MB990SP-B dual 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch bracket

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Handy, very handy. Icy Dock presents the MB990SP-B, this bracket enables you to install two 2.5" storage devices into a 3.5" bay.  Introducing the Icy Dock MB990SP-B Dual 2.5" to 3.5" SATA and IDE Solid State and Hard Disk Drive Converter. This dual bay drive bracket allows you to use two SATA or IDE SSD and HDD in an internal 3.5" drive bay in most standard cases. Since most cases are not set up to use 2.5" form factor, the MB990SP-B allows you to make a huge upgrade to your system with very little effort.

The bracket will fit most types of cases. Out of the box it can be used in both tool-less and standard cases. The EZ Fit pins on the sides of the bracket fit into most standard mounting holes, and are also removable to use either your case's proprietary mounting brackets, or to use screws for a more secure fit.

The EZ FIT bracket is extremely lightweight and has an open air design for maximum air flow and cooling of the drives. Most standard 2.5" IDE or SATA drives can be used due to the open back design, allowing use of direct connections to the drive, also giving the user flexibility to mix and match drives.

Product Features:

  • Fits standard 2.5" SATA / IDE SSD and HDD (9.5mm)
  • Lightweight constructions
  • For use in 3.5" internal drive bay

Sony PS3 might finally be hacked ...

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Rumors started on Saturday that hackers may have found a way to fully crack the PlayStation 3 console without using a mod chip, more info can be found over here.

The system has remained (mostly) uncompromised for over three years now, with a few exceptions here and there. But, this one pledges full read/write access to the entire system memory and complete control over the processor -- all without a mod chip. Has he really done it, if so how, and what comes next? That all remains to be seen. This exploit supposedly "isn't really patchable, but [Sony] can make implementations much harder," meaning he isn't tipping his hat until he's ready, because once he does the never-ending firmware update war begins, and as we've seen on the PSP, Sony can really knock out those updates.

HIS Radeon HD 5670 ICEQ review

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

HIS Radeon HD 5670 ICEQ review

The one thing we mentioned in the reference review however was the fact that the reference product is a tiny bit too audible for a HTPC (well at least for me .. I'm totally anal like that). So I was already expecting ATI's partners to release a product with custom cooling to keep them noise levels down a notch further.

Of course the minute when that popped into my mind I already received an email from the guys at HIS, asking us to review the Radeon HD 5670 equipped with their classic ICEQ cooler. And that equals completely silent noise levels versus good cooling at a fair price.

Let's check out the review, right here.

Judge rules NVIDIA violates three Rambus patents

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageSome bad and likely very expensive news for NVIDIA. The International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled today that NVIDIA is violating three patents owned by Rambus. The patents relate to memory controller technology that is used in the company's GeForce, Quadro, nForce, Tesla and Tegra products.

A judge with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington said today that Nvidia is violating three patents owned by Rambus. Two other patents are invalid, said Judge Theodore Essex. His decision, which is subject to review by the full commission, may result in a ban on imports of Nvidia chips and products that use them, including some computers made by Hewlett-Packard Co.

Rambus, based in Los Altos, California, has been in litigation for a decade against companies that refused to license its patents. On Jan. 19, Samsung Electronics Co. said it would pay $900 million to end its legal dispute with Rambus and reach a new licensing deal over computer-memory technology.

Guru3D Discovers who Top Gear's "The Stig" really is !

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D Discovers who Top Gear's "The Stig" really is !

(well sort off).

Yesterday Guru3D attended a press-conference from Intel. The press conference was about the latest desktop and mobile Core i3/i5 series products with their respective features. You guys have been able to read all about the latest processors here are Guru3D.com when they launched on January the 3rd. You can read our Core i5 650 - 660 and 661 processor review right here.

The press conference was held at the RAI in Amsterdam where the Top Gear live show also is held for three days (great show btw - should it be held in your country and you like Top gear ? Then definitely go). The Intel press conference was therefore named and styled after the popular automotive show and the presentation labeled at "Top Core". There was a surprising moment when no-one else other than the  Stig actually arrived on scene holding a nice 32nm Clarkdale wafer. We have some footage of that which we'd like to show you, have a look and sorry for the low quality video and lag - something in the video transcoding process seems to have an issue and causing some small hiccups:

So there you have it guys, the Stig unveiled. No-one knew that he would be Jan Schouten - RCO at Intel Benelux. We could have known though, some say he eats Pentium 4 cores in the morning just to have a good breakfast.

After the prank and during the presentation obviously the entire new line of processors was introduced which include the Core i3 530 and 540 models, as well as the Core i5 650, 660, 661, and 670, which will be featured with Hyper-Threading, 4MB of L3 cache and support for dual-channel DDR3-1333 memory next to the mobile line-up that is.

As stated we have already published an in-depth review on Core i5 650 - 660 and 661 and with a bit of luck we'll add Core i3 results next week as well. Let's check the next video clip:

In the presentation a representative from CodeMasters was attending and talking about the importance of multi-threaded support in the Core series processors but also briefly touching the subject 3D gaming which apparently caught Intel's interest as well. This is a very low-level generic interview, interesting none the less.

Again, more on Intel and Core i3 next week along with a couple of pending H55/57 motherboards reviews soon. And on that bombshell .. good night, and have a good weekend !
