Guru3D Rig of the Year 2009

Contest 32 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D Rig of the Year 2009

Out of all the collected entries, each month here at Guru3D.com we select a user submitted rig of the month. This year we started with some sponsoring with a little help from OCZ to make this segment of the website a little more interesting. Each rig of the month will receive a prize starting December 2009, but we just decided on what out of the 2009 entries we here at Guru3D.com feel is the rig of the year.

First off, I like to thank each and everyone who submitted their rig in this contest. The voting system we initially used was showing a discrepancy, as such we decided to judge ourselves.

The winner of the Rig of the Year will receive a spanking new shiny 120GB OCZ Vertex Solid State Disk shipped to the winners home address for free.

vertexSSD[1].jpgThe OCZ Vertex Series delivers the performance and reliability of SSDs at a lower price per gigabyte than other high speed offerings currently on the market. The OCZ Vertex Series is the result of all the latest breakthroughs in SSD technology, including the first model on the market to use the Indilinx Barefoot controller, blazing read/write speeds, and 64MB of onboard cache (read our review).

Without further ado -- the winner of the 2009 Rig of the year is Mark Doney - with the March 2009 Rig of the Month entry. Congratulations mark. Check out Mark's rig here.

Danamics LMX cooler gets tested

Cooling 272 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Much discussed for the usage of poisonous liquid metal the Danamics LMX liquid metal cooler got tested. This is the second attempt from Danamics at a processor cooler that uses liquid metal cooling technology.

The product is still gonna fail as it's as expensive as a good water-cooling kit yet still has a hard time battling off three to four times cheaper high-end air based CPU coolers. With a price tag of around 170EUR it makes more sense to invest in something else and the heck away from it.

"The Danamics LMX liquid metal cooler is one of those products that doesn't currently have a niche, that isn't to say that there will never be one, just that at the moment there is still a well defined line between high end air cooling and decent water cooling. In theory, the LMX should have fallen somewhere between the two camps, making itself a spot and satisfying demand. The problem that we have is that although the LMX does beat the rest of the high-end air-cooled pack, it doesn't do it by a significant enough margin for it to be a viable proposition for most people. Cost is a significant factor and at

Cruden Hexatech race car simulator

Games 1603 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

There you have it .. the ultimate race car simulator ! About the closest I come to racing is being stuck in traffic and making race car noises with my mouth. All that can change for the low low price of $191,000. Wait what?  The Cruden Hexatech racing simulator is so realisitc it gives feedback onchassis, track, tire and suspension settings, drive trains, aero load, aero draft, steering, brakes, and various driver aids.  The racing simulator comes with three 42 inch LCD screens. But really if you are going to shell out that kinda dough you might as well go all out and go for a projector setup.

We got a video on it.

AMD to release two six-core processors

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

We all know that AMD is preparing hexa-core consumer processors for the  April~June timeframe in 2010. According to rumors on the web AMD will release not one but two of them.

Thge processors are obviously based on the Thuban architecture (Istanbul chips for servers) are compatible with socket AM3 and will have integrated dual-channel PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz) memory controllers. We believe that Thuban processors will keep the AMD Phenom II brand name but like will be tagged as Phenom II X6 processors. The processors would feature 3MB L2 cache (512KB per core) and 6MB of L3 cache. The chips will be made using 45nm SOI fabrication process and though unconfirmed we expect them to run at roughly 3 GHz as the current server hexacore chips operate at 2.80 GHz already.

SMall guru note: Thuban is actually a star in the constellation of Draco. It also means

Nokia claims virtually all Apple devices violate its patents

HTPC 228 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

A new mudfight is coming up inbetween two giants in mobile land. Nokia filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) saying almost all of the company's products violate its patents not just the Apple iPhone. According to Reuters, Nokia believes Apple's iPhone, iPods and computers all violate its intellectual property rights.

Nokia filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on Tuesday alleging that Apple infringes Nokia patents in "virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers" sold. The seven patents at issue relate to Nokia technology being used by Apple to create features in user interface, camera, antenna and power management technologies, it said in a statement.

A Nokia spokesman said the firm expected the ITC to decide whether to pursue the case in around 30 days. Any possible injunction against the sale of Apple products with regard to the alleged patent infringement would not happen until early 2011.

Radeon HD 5500 series GPUs by February 2010

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageWe talked about it before, but it seems that AMD will launch the 40nm Radeon HD 5570/5670 (Redwood) and Radeon HD 5450 (Cedar) GPUs by the end of January or early February 2010.

Though yields of TSMC's 40nm process have reportedly improved, but capacity is still too low to fully service both ATI and NVIDIA. In related news, although Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC's) 40nm process yields have already improved, capacity is still not sufficient to supply the two GPU giants fully which may have an impact the launch schedules, the sources added.
